We respect gender-segregated celebrations and plan our coverage of the men's and ladies' sides with care. We move softly around the imam through the nikah, capturing the real moments rather than staging them. We read the rhythm of a nikah and walima and are always in position for the signing of the nikah-nama.

When there is time for couple portraits, Victoria Park in the north of the borough, one of London's oldest public parks is a favourite, and Canary Wharf financial district and the historic Tower of London on its western edge makes a memorable setting.

The nikah, the mahr and the dua

The dua at the close of the nikah brings the families together, and we capture it with warmth. We work quietly around the imam so the nikah is never disturbed. The most solemn moments of the nikah are captured from a respectful distance with a quiet long lens.

The dholki brings evenings of singing and drumming before the wedding, and we photograph their energy. The mangni, the engagement that begins the journey, is one we are glad to cover when families ask. Where the celebrations are segregated, we cover the men's and ladies' sides with equal care.
