During the dholki the drum passes from lap to lap, and we photograph the clapping circle, the improvised verses and the women singing late into the evening. Somali weddings carry their own sequence of gatherings and their own music, and we ask rather than assume, because a template borrowed from another community would miss half of what matters.

The getting-ready hours are given their full due, from the fastening of the bridal jewellery to the tying of the groom's turban.
