Victoria Park is where dog work in this borough usually lands, and the argument for it is room to get things wrong in. An old public park is large and its paths run through the middle rather than around the outside, so there is quiet ground within reach of a gate without a long march to get to it. That matters for two animals in particular: the one whose recall is unreliable, which spends the whole session attached to a long line, and the one that tires early, which is most dogs past about ten years old. Then there is the coat. This borough sets pale stone and glass near the financial district against dark Victorian brick elsewhere, and a black or liver dog placed in front of the pale version collapses into a silhouette with no eyes and no muzzle. The camera cannot hold both: meter for the coat and the background burns out, meter for the background and the dog goes solid. We take the first of those, turn the animal side-on to whatever light exists so the coat picks up a rim along its back, and let the background go bright. Pale dogs get the reverse treatment and the reverse background. Cats, rabbits and elderly dogs get photographed at home. A frightened animal in an unfamiliar room gives you flattened ears and a hard eye, and no amount of patience later in the session undoes it.
