The dog sets the pace. We photograph from low down, level with the head rather than looking onto it, which is what makes an animal look like itself. Treats and a familiar toy do more than any instruction we could give, so bring both.
If the dog has had enough after twenty minutes, that is the session, and we would rather stop there. Older or anxious animals are booked at the quietest hour we can get.

Kaushik Bathia has photographed our family on many occasions and done a fantastic job. His work is displayed all over our family homes and he has captured moments which will be cherished forever. He also managed to get great pictures of my two children (both under 5), a near enough impossible task in itself. We highly recommend!

Why book with us
Working dogs and house pets need different handling, particularly on busy City paving. A gundog responds to commands; a family dog to its name and a squeaky toy. A raised paw, a lolling tongue or a sleepy blink is what we wait for, because those make a pet portrait feel alive.
For the wall, most owners choose one large print of a single animal, though framed pictures and canvases are available. Every pet session closes with an edited set that shows the animal exactly as its owner knows it.

In the City of London, an outdoor pet session is planned around a quiet spot where your animal can explore safely on the lead. - Hampstead Heath dog code. The City of London Corporation, which looks after Hampstead Heath in north London, requires dogs on the Heath to be under control, to return when called off the lead and to be picked up after, and requires professional dog walkers to hold a licence. 1
- The Barbican Estate, built between 1965 and 1976 to designs by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, is a Grade II listed brutalist complex on a 35-acre site with terrace blocks around a lake and raised pedestrian highwalks. 2

Kaushik Bathia has 25+ years of photography behind him, and every pet session is paced for the animal: slow movements, quiet voices and time to explore before the camera comes out. Dogs, cats and small pets of every age and temperament are welcome.
Of course you can. Owner-and-pet portraits are some of the most affecting pictures a session can produce, and a quiet garden gives them room. Step into the frame to show the bond between you, or stay just out of shot to keep your dog settled and looking our way.
Very little. Walk an excitable dog before you arrive, and a slightly hungry pet will be keener on the treats we offer. Pack a favourite toy and the treats they love, and leave the rest to us. Patience and timing are our job.
Both, though in the City of London the choice is nearly made for you. The Square Mile's gardens are small and open to the public, so an outdoor session here would be an on lead one, ideally at Postman's Park, where the quiet suits a dog that reacts to noise and movement.

Pet photography in the Square Mile is shaped by the ground. Most of the ground is paved, the gardens are small and shared with the public, and a lead therefore stays clipped on from start to finish. That removes the loose frames entirely, so what remains is a sitting built on stillness: a dog on a bench, a dog beside pale stone, a dog looking at its owner rather than running at them. Postman's Park earns its place here for a reason that has nothing to do with how it looks. It is quiet. Most dogs photograph badly outdoors because of noise and because people keep arriving behind them, and a calm garden removes both problems at once. A nervous animal that would struggle on a busy street has a far better chance of settling there. The benches help twice over, since lifting a small dog onto one brings its eyes up to camera level, and a picture taken from above a dog is mostly a picture of the top of a dog. Coat colour is the other decision. City paving, wet or dry, sits in the same dark mid tones as a black or dark brindle coat, and against it every edge of the animal disappears. Older animals get short visits and are photographed sitting throughout, because hard paving is no surface to ask tired joints to work on.

How it works
Pet sessions in the City of London
We travel to the City of London from Northwood (about 15 miles) rather than asking you to travel to us. Out on location we keep kit light for a pet sitting, so a nervous dog is not crowded by stands and lights.
Pet sessions are photographed by Kaushik Bathia, a fellow of the BIPP and the MPA with five European Kodak Gold Awards, from Northwood, where he set up in 2001.
