Sessions are kept to about forty minutes, which is roughly how long genuine interest lasts. Bring whatever treats actually work at home rather than the ones sold as irresistible, and bring a toy that makes a noise nobody has heard for a while.
A long line stays clipped on for recall and is removed afterwards in the editing, which means an unreliable dog can still be photographed running. The finished set arrives at full size, with small copies for sending on.

A listed park around a house is not open dog country, and treating it as though it were is the usual mistake. The planting is arranged, the edges are clipped, and in parts of it a lead has to stay on. That sounds like a restriction and is closer to a help, because a lead can be held out of frame at the end of an arm, whereas a dog given the whole park becomes a small shape in the middle distance. Footing is the second gain. Gravel and made surfaces suit an old dog far better than tussocked grass, and an animal that is confident about where its feet are carries itself differently. The real difficulty in formally planted ground is contrast. Clipped evergreen is close to the darkest surface available outdoors, and a black or dark brindle coat set in front of it collapses into an outline, the fur keeping no detail at all. The answer is not more light but different ground: pale gravel, a bed in flower, or a low hedge with sky above it, so the coat has something lighter to read against. For a nervous animal the compartments do work that open space cannot, since a corner of a formal layout has one way in and one way out, and a dog able to see the whole of its surroundings settles sooner. Older animals get short sessions on flat ground, with the sitting and standing frames taken while the interest is still there and the movement left until later, if at all.

Visiting the studio from Ealing
Studio pet sessions take place at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, about 8 miles from Ealing. Studio pet sessions are booked ahead, and the studio also restores, frames and scans old photographs and negatives. The studio also takes passport and ID photos. Hours are 10:30 to 18:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, 13:00 to 18:00 on Sundays.
