A listed park around a house is not open dog country, and treating it as though it were is the usual mistake. The planting is arranged, the edges are clipped, and much of that ground is ground where a lead stays on. That sounds like a restriction and is closer to a help, because a lead can be held out of frame at the end of an arm, whereas a dog given the whole park becomes a small shape in the middle distance. Footing is the second gain. Gravel and made surfaces suit an old dog far better than tussocked grass, and an animal that is confident about where its feet are carries itself differently. The real difficulty in formally planted ground is contrast. Clipped evergreen is close to the darkest surface available outdoors, and a black or dark brindle coat set in front of it collapses into an outline, the fur keeping no detail at all. The answer is not more light but different ground: pale gravel, a bed in flower, or a low hedge with sky above it, so the coat has something lighter to read against. For a nervous animal the compartments do work that open space cannot, since a corner of a formal layout has one way in and one way out, and a dog able to see the whole of its surroundings settles sooner. Older animals get short sessions on flat ground, with the sitting and standing frames taken while the interest is still there and the movement left until later, if at all.
