We plan for about forty-five minutes and expect the first ten to be spent being ignored, which is normal and worth the time. An animal that has decided we are furniture behaves better than one still being introduced. Nothing is rushed in that opening stretch and nothing is asked of the animal during it.
Anxious and elderly animals are photographed sitting or lying down, close in and from low. You receive the whole edited set, because with animals the keeper is very often the accident.

Bring treats it does not get often, and its own blanket if we are working at the Northwood studio. At Fryent, a walk before we start takes the edge off without tiring the animal out.
Absolutely. Yes, shy cats just need time, and we allow plenty. The studio stays quiet while your cat explores, and the camera only comes out once curiosity wins over caution. A timid cat shows its character once it stops feeling watched.
A wonderful variety. Dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs and horses are all welcome. If your pet is less usual, tell us about it first and we will talk it through. Whatever the animal, the approach is the same: patience and quick reactions.
Sooner than you might expect. Editing starts soon after the session, so the wait is short. Once the edited gallery is ready you can view, share and pick favourites, and we can help choose prints, frames or canvases.
Very little. Walk an excitable dog before we start, and skip the last snack so treats hold more appeal. Pack a favourite toy and let your pet behave as it normally would. The waiting and the timing are our job.

Grass height is the first thing to settle at Fryent, because 103 hectares of field is not one surface. Cut short, a small dog stands clear of it; once the grass is up, anything below knee height vanishes from the chest down and every picture becomes a head in a green sea. The fix is not a longer lens. It is choosing the shorter ground, the tracks worn through and the field margins, and letting the tall grass sit behind the animal as background rather than in front of it as obstruction. Rolling open ground is also exposed ground, which matters more for animals than for people. Wind lifts a coat and gives movement that a still day never will, but it also pins ears back and makes eyes water and narrow, so on a blowy day we work with the wind coming from behind the camera and give the animal something to look at rather than into. Space is the real argument for Fryent with a nervous animal. On a park of this size a hundred metres can be kept between your dog and the next stranger, and an animal that is not bracing for an approach carries its ears completely differently. For an older animal, slopes are the constraint. We would pick flat ground near where you arrive, work down at the animal's height, and let it stay put while the camera moves around it. Where standing is difficult, the studio is the kinder option.
