A tidal river changes a dog session more than a pond in an inland park ever does. The foreshore is both the obvious draw and the obvious problem: at low water it is soft, slick and covered in whatever the tide left behind, and it fills again faster than most owners expect. A dog that swims happily in a lake is not doing the same thing in a river with a run on it. The sensible default in Bishop's Park is to work the walks and the grass above the wall and treat the foreshore as scenery, which has the side benefit of a dog clean enough to put back in a car. Recall decides what happens next. This is a built-up borough with the A4 running through it, so anything short of word-perfect wears a training line, slack, held wide of the shot and painted out afterwards. Coat colour then decides exposure. Bright water behind a black or very dark dog will pull the camera towards protecting the water and losing the face, so we expose for the coat and let the river go bright, or turn the animal so the reflected light comes at it from the front. Nervous dogs do better along the tree-lined walks, set back from the open bank where wind carries every noise further than it should. For an older dog, or one that tires quickly, the session is short, happens where it walks anyway, and the camera goes down to the dog rather than the dog being asked to look up at it.
