Studio and outdoor pet photography in Hackney

We plan a short session rather than a long one, and finish while the enthusiasm is still there instead of grinding on until the pictures start showing a bored animal.

Treats, squeaks and a favourite toy all get used, and we ask you to bring the ones that genuinely hold attention rather than whatever is in the cupboard. You receive a set with both halves in it: the still, formal frames and the undignified ones, because most people want both.

What we offer

Pet photography in Hackney

01

Horses & Small Pets

Dogs photographed on Victoria Park's lawns; nervous, elderly or indoor animals photographed at home instead.

02

Rescue Dogs

Exposure set for a dark coat, so black and deep brown fur keeps its detail and outline.

03

Nervous Animals

Short sessions that finish while the animal still thinks the whole business is good fun.

Local and experienced

Why families in Hackney book us

We keep owners involved, using your voice and your hands to get your pet looking exactly where we want. Sessions run on the animal's clock. If a cat gives fifteen good minutes then the session lasted fifteen minutes, since pushing on only produces pictures of an irritated cat.

Sessions are kept short by design. A pet portrait does not need three hours, and no animal produces its best work during the third one. Working dogs can be photographed in the field with their handler and their kit, which produces something quite different from anything made in a studio.

Good to know

Pet Photographer in Hackney, FAQs

Absolutely, bring them along. A favourite toy or a handful of treats helps your pet relax and gives us a way to catch its gaze. We stock plenty ourselves too, from squeaky toys to a whole repertoire of very silly noises when they are needed. Locally in Hackney that takes in The Hackney Empire, a Grade II* listed Edwardian theatre.

Patience, above everything. We move unhurriedly, speak softly and let your pet decide the pace, relying on treats and play rather than force. Because the studio is kept quiet and free of other animals, nervous cats and dogs feel safe enough to settle naturally. Outdoors in Hackney we would head for Victoria Park, one of London's oldest public parks with lakes and open lawns.

Both. Outdoors in Hackney means Victoria Park, where the lawns give a dog space to settle before anything is asked of it. Northwood is the better answer for cats, rabbits, anxious dogs and very dark coats, since a controlled background keeps a black animal from merging into everything behind it. Tell us which you would prefer; if the other suits your animal better, we will say so.

We do. As well as your edited digital gallery, there are fine prints, framed pictures and canvases to choose from, ready to hang in your Hackney home. We will happily talk you through the sizes and finishes that will look best on your walls.

Yes, throughout the borough and in Dalston, Stoke Newington and Clapton. We agree a park gate to meet at rather than a vague spot, and ask you to bring food your dog does not get at home. Swap a bulky harness for a slim collar before we start, because chest straps and padded handles dominate every close frame and are tedious to remove afterwards.

Off-lead ground has to be sorted out before anything else in a borough this busy. Hackney's shopping streets and market days are the wrong opening for any dog unsure of crowds, because an animal that arrives already overloaded does not calm down later, it only gets more tired. Victoria Park's open lawns are the alternative, and their scale is exactly what makes them useful: a nervous dog gets a long approach in which nothing happens, and a photograph taken twenty minutes after that walk looks nothing like one taken on arrival. The lakes bring a complication of their own. Birds on water undo recall in dogs that are otherwise entirely dependable, so anything worked near a bank happens on a trailing line, and the line comes out at the edit stage. Contrast is the other local problem. Dark coats against dark water lose their outline altogether, and the borough gives plenty of dark backgrounds to fall into, so a black or deep brown animal goes in front of the lawn or against open sky where the edge of the body has something to sit against, and the exposure is set for the coat rather than the surroundings. Older animals want the working area kept small, with the walking cut to almost nothing and the sitting frames taken first while the joints are still warm. Cats, house rabbits and anything that panics outdoors are photographed at home or in Northwood, where there is no traffic, no other dogs and no reason to bolt.
