We plan a short session rather than a long one, and finish while the enthusiasm is still there instead of grinding on until the pictures start showing a bored animal.
Treats, squeaks and a favourite toy all get used, and we ask you to bring the ones that genuinely hold attention rather than whatever is in the cupboard. You receive a set with both halves in it: the still, formal frames and the undignified ones, because most people want both.

I went into the photoshoot with reservations, as I wasn’t sure how well my youngest child (3 years) would be in a photoshoot situation. As soon as walking into the shoot and seeing how Kaushik interacted with the little ones, I was immediately put at ease. He amazingly kept my child smiling and laughing for an hour, where I can’t seem to manage to do for 30 seconds!

You stay involved, using your voice and hands to direct your pet's gaze where we need it. The animal decides how long we go on. If a cat offers fifteen good minutes, that is the session, because carrying on only produces pictures of a cross cat.
We plan short sessions on purpose. No animal does its best work in the third hour, so we never plan one.

Off-lead ground has to be sorted out before anything else in a borough this busy. Hackney's shopping streets and market days are the wrong opening for any dog unsure of crowds, because an animal that arrives already overloaded does not calm down later, it only gets more tired. Victoria Park's open lawns are the alternative, and their scale is exactly what makes them useful: a nervous dog gets a long approach in which nothing happens, and a photograph taken twenty minutes after that walk looks nothing like one taken on arrival. The lakes bring a complication of their own. Birds on water undo recall in dogs that are otherwise entirely dependable, so anything worked near a bank happens on a trailing line, and the line comes out at the edit stage. Contrast is the other local problem. Dark coats against dark water lose their outline altogether, and the borough gives plenty of dark backgrounds to fall into, so a black or deep brown animal goes in front of the lawn or against open sky where the edge of the body has something to sit against, and the exposure is set for the coat rather than the surroundings. Older animals want the working area kept small, with the walking cut to almost nothing and the sitting frames taken first while the joints are still warm. Cats, house rabbits and anything that panics outdoors are photographed at home or in Northwood, where there is no traffic, no other dogs and no reason to bolt.
