We come early, find the least reflective wall on the floor, and set two lights: one on the face, one on the background. Each person needs five to ten minutes, most of it spent on posture rather than expression.
Your setup is written down, so a starter photographed in the autumn matches a colleague done in spring. You choose from proofs, and retouching stays at blemishes and stray hair. Nobody queues either: we work to a list of names and times supplied in advance.

Yes, matching is straightforward when we can see the originals. Send us a couple of current headshots and we mirror their lighting, background and crop for each new joiner. Colleagues at a desk near Lime Street or in a regional office end up looking part of the same set.
Distance is not really the question for a headshot, because the lighting travels with us and the corner we set up in the City of London is a corner we control. What arrives is a fixed arrangement: the background lit separately from the face, which is what stops the dark tailoring everybody wears here from merging into the wall behind it. In the Square Mile a headshot is usually ordered by a firm rather than wanted by the person being photographed, and that sets the brief before we open a case. The picture does not need to be interesting. It needs to sit in a row of colleagues at the same crop, the same eye height and the same background weight, so a client scrolling a team page cannot pick out who was done last. The other thing this district decides is lighting. Finance dresses dark, and a dark suit against a dark background surrenders the shoulder line completely, leaving the head to float with no body under it. So the background gets a light of its own, set to read a stop or so brighter than the jacket, and the shape of the person comes back. Getting to us is worth thinking about honestly. A team is a different calculation. Twelve people leaving their desks for half a day costs a firm far more than one photographer travelling in, so we come to you and take a room for the day instead.
