Pet work is the smallest thing booked in Westminster and it is worth saying why rather than dressing the borough up as something it is not. St James's Park is a royal park with a lake and water birds on it, pelicans among them. A lake full of birds and a dog with no lead attached is not an arrangement anybody should be setting up on purpose, so plan for the lead staying on throughout and plan the pictures around that rather than against it. Standing, sitting, walking beside a person, looking up at somebody it trusts: all of those photograph well on a lead. The frames of a dog at full stretch, which is what most owners picture when they imagine a session, are not what this ground can offer, and hearing that beforehand is better than discovering it on the day. A lead is simple to lift out of a finished picture where it crosses plain path and awkward where it crosses grass, railings or anything patterned, so we place the handler to drop the line against the simplest thing available. Stone is the other consideration. It is pale and a black or chocolate coat is not, and a camera set for the stone renders the dog as an outline. The fix is to work closer, give the animal more of the frame and let the background go bright, rather than trying to hold both ends. Old dogs, and any animal that finds the street hard going, do better indoors where they live and nothing arrives from behind.
