…Kaushik's work is fantastic and he took so much stress out of our special day. He and his team are highly professional, fun and friendly and work with you to capture the shots that you want. He captured some amazing moments of both us and our guests, some natural, some posed but all truly wonderful. We were blown away by our albums and videos and have no hesitation in recommending him to our family and friends.

Newham

Nikah and walima in Newham, from Green Street to East Ham

Newham had 351,030 residents at the 2021 census, and 34.8% of them are Muslim, the second-highest proportion of any London borough. Its register office is at East Ham Town Hall, 324 Barking Road, where marriage ceremonies and notices are held by appointment, so the civil part can be arranged close to home.

Green Street, between Romford Road and Barking Road, is a regional shopping street for South Asian fashion, jewellery, fabrics and food. A short outfit shoot there before the mehndi or walima is an option, with each shop's permission, and it gives the album a sense of where the family comes from.

For the nikah itself, tell us whether it will be at home, at a mosque or at the reception venue, and who will lead it. Kaushik plans quiet positions in advance and stays still while the imam speaks and the nikah-nama is signed, then photographs the family around the couple once the formal part is complete.

Respectful coverage

Modesty, prayers and each family's wishes

Every family has its own views on photography at a Muslim wedding. Before the day, tell us which moments you want photographed, any guests who prefer not to appear, and any part of the day that should not be photographed at all. Kaushik works from that list.

When guests step away to pray, photography pauses, and Kaushik waits quietly until prayers are finished before carrying on. If the venue has a prayer room, tell us where it is so that it stays out of the photographs.

Modest dress and careful posing go together. Portraits are guided gently, with poses that suit the outfits and the family's comfort, and nothing is asked of anyone that they would not be happy to see in the album.

Tower Hamlets

Brick Lane, Whitechapel and a nikah in Tower Hamlets

Brick Lane, in the area some call Banglatown, is described as the heart of the country's Bangladeshi community. For couples marrying in Tower Hamlets, the register office is at St George's Town Hall, 236 Cable Street, near Shadwell DLR and Windrush line stations, and Whitechapel station is served by the District, Hammersmith & City, Elizabeth and Windrush lines.

Portraits in Tower Hamlets can take in Victoria Park, which Tower Hamlets Council describes as London's oldest public park, or Mile End Park with its Green Bridge over the Mile End Road. For a river backdrop, Island Gardens on the Isle of Dogs looks across the Thames to Greenwich.

Redbridge and Waltham Forest

Mehndi and walima in Ilford, Leyton and Walthamstow

Among Redbridge Council's licensed ceremony venues is a banqueting venue that hosts Asian weddings with mehndi, nikah, baraat and walima events. Redbridge Town Hall on Ilford's High Road holds civil ceremonies in its first-floor Elizabeth Suite for up to 30 guests, photographers included.

In Waltham Forest, the civil ceremony rooms are at Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall, on Forest Road, and notices are given at Walthamstow Central Library or Leytonstone Library. For portraits after a Leyton walima, Coronation Gardens on Oliver Road has the borough's last surviving bandstand, a maze and ornamental gardens.

A mehndi at home in Leyton or Ilford can be smaller and livelier than the walima. Tell us the room, the start time and when the henna artist begins, and the photographs will follow the evening as it builds.
