Chelmsford's You Plus Two
The Essex Register Office holds legal ceremonies for the couple and two witnesses only, on Mondays and Thursdays. It suits a small civil step before a large nikah and walima.

An Essex Muslim wedding often pairs a nikah at home or at your mosque with a legal ceremony at a register office, then a mehndi and a walima in halls further into the county. Kaushik plans each one by its town, from the Central line towns about 20 miles from Northwood to Colchester at about 57.
The short answer
Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs the nikah, the mehndi or dholki and the walima anywhere in Essex, from Loughton and Chigwell, about 20 to 21 miles from the Northwood studio, to Chelmsford, Southend-on-Sea and Colchester. He can also cover the civil ceremony, whether that is a You Plus Two at the Essex Register Office or a larger one in the Mulberry Suite at Grays. Wedding photography starts from £750, and travel for each day is set out in your written quote before you book.
The Owner is very friendly and professional. I have been using Mr Bathia for over 15 years and have seen him through multiple family weddings.
Superb and highly professional wedding photographer. We had the pleasure of working with Kaushik Bathia Photography for a recent wedding at Orchardleigh Estate.
A superb and highly professional wedding photographer. Throughout the registry and wedding ceremonies Kaushik Bathia took beautiful photographs ensuring he captured all the special moments. His friendly personality put everyone at ease and his unique ideas resulted in some wonderful family pictures which we will treasure forever.
The legal ceremony
A nikah is recognised in English law only when it takes place in a building registered for marriages with an authorised person present, so you may want to add a civil ceremony on the same day or a different one. In most of Essex that civil step runs through Essex County Council, whose own Essex Register Office in Chelmsford holds only You Plus Two ceremonies on Mondays and Thursdays: the couple, two witnesses and the registrars, with nobody else in the room.
That shape suits a family that wants the legal part kept small and the celebration kept for the nikah and the walima. Kaushik can photograph the couple and witnesses arriving, the signing if the registrars allow it, and a few portraits outside afterwards, with the short drive back to the family home planned into the timings. A larger civil ceremony with guests has to move to one of the more than 130 venues the council has approved.
Notice of marriage comes first, and it is given at a local registration office. In Essex these include Epping Library on St John Road, Harlow Central Library on Cross Street, Brentwood Library on New Road and Burghstead Lodge on Billericay High Street, where notice is given by appointment. Basildon Library asks for every appointment to be booked in advance, so book notice as soon as the nikah date is fixed.

Thurrock and Southend
If you live in Thurrock, your register office is run by Thurrock Council from the Civic Offices on New Road, Grays. The Mulberry Suite there takes up to 60 people in the wedding party, the couple may invite a photographer, and couples married in the Mulberry Suite or the smaller Lacey Room, for up to eight, can use the private gardens for photographs afterwards. For a family that wants parents, siblings and grandparents present at the legal ceremony, that is the most generous civil option in the south of the county.
Southend-on-Sea is also a unitary authority with its own office, on the ground floor of the Civic Centre in Victoria Avenue. Its ceremony room holds the couple, two witnesses and two further guests, so it works for a quiet legal ceremony a day or two before the nikah. Grays is about 33 miles from Northwood and Southend about 48, and travel to either is quoted in writing with the rest of the coverage.
The nikah
A nikah is short: a sermon, the consent of both parties, the agreement of the mahr and the signing before witnesses. It often takes place in a family living room, and in Essex the nearest homes are in the Central line towns, Loughton about 20 miles from the studio, Chigwell about 21 and Epping about 23. A nikah in Brentwood is about 31 miles away, Chelmsford about 39 and Colchester about 57, so the start time is planned with the drive in mind.
If your nikah is at a mosque, tell us which one and any photography guidance it gives, and Kaushik plans around it. Some families want the whole nikah photographed; others want only the signing and the family portraits afterwards. Tell us which moments, rooms and guests to leave out, and he keeps to that through every event. When the call to prayer comes, the camera stops and he waits quietly until the prayer is finished.
In winter maghrib falls in the late afternoon, so a December nikah or walima will pause earlier than one in June. Share the day's prayer times with us and they go into the plan alongside the drive between your Essex addresses.

Mehndi and dholki
Essex families are spread along very different roads. Harlow sits on the River Stort with the M11 passing to its east, Basildon is served by the A13 and A127, and Colchester by the A12. A mehndi or dholki in Basildon and a nikah in Harlow are on different corridors, so each event is planned as its own day with its own start time, rather than squeezed into one long drive.
The mehndi is usually the most relaxed event: henna, songs around the dholki, cousins performing and trays of sweets passed round. Kaushik moves around the edge of the room and photographs the henna details early, before the dancing starts and the designs are touched. If the evening is in a hired hall, ask what time the room must be cleared, because it decides when the last family photographs can be taken.
For families who want a portrait of the couple in their mehndi outfits, an hour in daylight before the guests arrive is usually enough, either in the garden or in a nearby park from the list further down this page.
The walima
The walima usually follows a day or more after the nikah and is often the biggest event. In Essex it can be held in a hotel suite or a banqueting hall, and some of the county's venues publish dedicated Asian wedding offers that cover the nikah and walima, with space for a stage. Others offer venue-only hire, so you can bring the caterer your family trusts. Ask each venue about halal catering, the stage position and the time the room must be clear.
With several hundred guests, the stage photographs can take over the evening unless there is a plan. Send us a short list of family groups before the day, and pick a relative who knows the guests to bring each group to the stage in turn. A second photographer can cover the room and the arrivals while Kaushik stays at the stage, and it is listed as a separate option in your quote.
Brentwood, on the Elizabeth line just outside the M25, is about 31 miles from Northwood and Chelmsford about 39. A walima in either is a routine booking, with the start time and the travel from Northwood written into the quote for that day.

Couple portraits
Between the nikah and the walima, or on a quieter day, Essex has strong places for modest couple portraits. Harlow Town Park, over 160 acres and designed by Dame Sylvia Crowe, has a water garden of three cascading spring-fed ponds around Jesse Watkins's Pisces sculpture and a rhododendron dell at its southern end. In Chelmsford, the Hylands grounds include the East Terrace Garden and the Pleasure Gardens.
On the estuary, the Cliff Gardens on Clifftown Parade look out over the Thames, and Southend's council points couples to the grounds of Priory Park around Prittlewell Priory as a setting for wedding photographs. In Colchester, Castle Park spreads 11 hectares around the Norman keep, with the Roman town wall running through it.
Epping Forest is the one place that needs paperwork: the City of London Corporation requires a licence for photography there, including portrait shoots, so choose it early or pick one of the parks above instead. Kaushik keeps the posing simple and modest, and nobody is asked to stand in a way they are not comfortable with.

Thurrock's Mulberry Suite takes up to 60 in the wedding party, a photographer can be invited, and the private gardens are open for photographs afterwards.

Burghstead Lodge in Billericay takes notice by appointment and Basildon Library asks for every appointment in advance, so book as soon as the date is set.
Loughton, Chigwell and Epping are about 20 to 23 miles from Northwood, the shortest drive for a morning nikah at home in Essex.
Portraits among the forest trees need a City of London Corporation licence. Harlow Town Park or the Southend Cliff Gardens need no such step.
