Portrait Photographer in Essex

A portrait session is about one person, or a few, photographed with care. In Essex that can mean a cathedral front, a sculpture in Harlow, a castle in Colchester or a plain studio backdrop.

The short answer

Where can I have a portrait photoshoot in Essex?

You can have a portrait session at home, at a landmark or park near you, or at the Northwood studio. Essex has strong settings, from the Roman wall in Colchester's Castle Park to Brentwood Cathedral and Harlow's public sculptures. Epping Forest requires a City of London Corporation licence for portrait photography, so allow time for that. Kaushik comes to you, and travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Essex, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

An amazing experience from start to finish. The photographer was professional, friendly, and made us feel completely at ease. The photos perfectly captured genuine moments between us and turned out even better than we expected. Highly recommend for couples looking for high-quality photography.

Google review, 2026

My two sisters and I ‘ the golden girls’ had a great, hilarious photo session. Kaushik is very professional and took some amazing photos especially when we were laughing so much trying to get up from the floor. Can’t wait to see ‘air brushed’ version. Well at 75 you need a little help. Definitely recommend Kashuik. He enjoyed our craziness!

Who it is for

Portraits for individuals, graduates and small businesses

People book portrait sessions for all sorts of reasons. A birthday or retirement, a new chapter after a hard year, a portrait of a parent or grandparent, or simply a good photograph of yourself that is not a selfie. Graduates want something to mark the end of a degree, and anyone running a small business needs photographs for a website, social media or a press profile that feel more personal than a headshot.

Kaushik spends the first part of the session getting to know you and how you like to be seen. Some people want something formal and calm; others want movement, laughter or a setting that says what they do. The plan is agreed by phone before the day, so you know where to meet, what to bring and how the time will be used.

Graduates

Graduation portraits around Colchester and beyond

The University of Essex occupies Wivenhoe Park near Colchester, so a graduation portrait in the north-east of the county can use the town as its backdrop. Colchester itself has strong settings close together: the castle, the largest Norman keep ever built in Europe, stands on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, and Castle Park around it covers 11 hectares with the Roman town wall and Hollytrees House among its eight listed buildings.

Colchester is the farthest Essex town from the studio at about 57 miles, so a graduation portrait there is planned with an early start and a clear meeting point. If gown hire means you are in Northwood or London anyway, the studio is another option. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, so the full cost is clear either way.

Settings

Essex landmarks that make a portrait

Essex architecture changes a great deal from town to town. Brentwood Cathedral was rebuilt by Quinlan Terry in an Italianate classical style between 1989 and 1991 beside the original Gothic church, a formal, symmetrical front for a portrait. Chelmsford Cathedral, Grade I listed and largely rebuilt from about 1520, has a quieter, older feel. St Mary's Church in Chigwell dates from the 12th century.

The post-war towns have their own character. Harlow holds more than 100 public sculptures, including works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Elisabeth Frink, and Basildon's town centre has Maurice Lambert's 1959 Mother and Child fountain and Brooke House, a 14-storey tower by Sir Basil Spence. In Grays, the State Cinema of 1938 is Grade II* listed for its Art Deco interior, and Loughton has three conservation areas and 56 listed buildings.

Always ask before photographing inside a church or on private land, and remember that the City of London Corporation requires a licence for portrait photography in Epping Forest. Public streets and town centres are usually the simplest choice, and a quiet weekday morning keeps passers-by out of the frame.

Personal branding

Portraits for your business in Essex

A personal branding session tells people what you do as well as what you look like. A baker might be photographed at the counter, a therapist in a calm consulting room, a tutor at a desk of books. Kaushik will suggest a mix of close portraits, wider scenes and detail shots, so you have a set of images for a website, social media and print, all in one consistent style.

If you also need a formal head and shoulders for LinkedIn or a company profile, add it to the same session. The Essex headshots page covers office headshot days, and the Essex commercial photography page covers products and premises. The session price is given by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383.

Studio

A studio portrait in Northwood Hills

For a clean, timeless look with nothing in the background, the studio at 21 Joel Street is the simplest choice. It is on the Joel Street parade two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line, with lighting set up and backdrops ready. Older relatives who would find a walk around a park tiring are often more comfortable here, and there is no weather to worry about.

Some clients do both: a studio portrait in the morning and a short location session another day, nearer home in Essex. The Essex overview explains how sessions are arranged across the county, from Loughton about 20 miles away to Southend about 48.

Planning

Planning around Essex

01

Pick a setting that fits you

A cathedral front, a sculpture, a riverside or your own workplace each say something different. Choose the one that suits the purpose of the portrait.

02

Permission for forest and private land

Epping Forest needs a City of London Corporation licence for portrait photography. Churches and private gardens need the owner's permission first.

03

Plan graduation timing

If your ceremony is at Wivenhoe Park, think about whether to shoot on the day in your gown or on a calmer day afterwards.

04

Bring a change of outfit

Two looks, one formal and one relaxed, double what you can use from the session, especially for personal branding.

Yes, but only with a licence. The City of London Corporation requires one for photography in Epping Forest, including portrait sessions, so apply in good time or choose a town street or another park.

Very much so. A session at their home or at the studio avoids long walks, and Kaushik works slowly and gently, with breaks whenever they are needed. Family members can join for a few group photographs too.

Yes. A personal branding session is designed for that, with portraits, wider scenes and details in a consistent style. Tell us how you plan to use the images so the session covers them.

Wear something you feel like yourself in. Solid colours keep attention on your face, and a second outfit gives variety. For outdoor sessions in cooler months, bring a coat that you are happy to be photographed in.

Your photographer is Kaushik Bathia, a fellow of both the BIPP and the MPA with five European Kodak Gold Awards, working from the studio he opened in Northwood in 2001.
