Pet and Dog Photographer in Essex

A pet session in Essex can be in your garden or on a walk with its own rules: leads at Parndon Wood and Langdon, the Lower Park only in Colchester's Castle Park, and a licence for Epping Forest. Kaushik plans around the rule before he plans the photographs.

The short answer

Where can I have a dog photoshoot in Essex?

At home, in your garden or in a park that welcomes dogs. Rules vary across Essex: dogs must be on a lead at Parndon Wood in Harlow and are not allowed on its woodland trails, Langdon near Basildon asks for leads on its trails, and Colchester's Upper Castle Park allows only service dogs. Epping Forest needs a photography licence. Kaushik comes to your home or chosen park, with the travel from Northwood written into your quote.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Essex, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

Me and my family are coming to this studio since last year to have our Christmas picture taken. We've been this year and for sure we are gonna come next year!!!

Georgiana C., Google review, 2015

I would HIGHLY recommend Northwood Hills Studios to anyone who wants to do family photos or special occasion photos.

Dharmesh K., Google review, 2017

…I felt the session was flexible and took into account the limited attention span of a 5 year old child! We had numerous photos taken of us, separately and together in three different outfits. We were very happy with the results and found it difficult to shortlist our favourites from soo many amazing photos. I would highly recommend them.

At home

Garden sessions from Loughton to Southend

Most animals are at their calmest at home. A dog who would pull on the lead in a strange park will lie in a patch of sun on the kitchen floor, and a cat or rabbit is usually best photographed where it lives. Kaushik works at your pet's level, with patience and a few squeaky toys, and lets the animal set the pace rather than forcing a pose.

An Essex garden has one more advantage: none of the county's park rules apply. There is no lead requirement, no licence and no published charge, and water and treats are close by. A home in Loughton is about 20 miles from the studio and one in Southend-on-Sea about 48, and that drive is quoted in writing with the session. See the national pet photography page for how a session runs.

Park rules

Essex parks and their dog rules

Before a park session we check the rules, because they differ a great deal across the county. At Parndon Wood Nature Reserve in Harlow, an ancient oak and hornbeam woodland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, dogs must be on a lead and are not allowed on the woodland trails. At Essex Wildlife Trust's Langdon reserve near Basildon, dogs must be kept on a lead on the trails.

In Colchester, Castle Park has two parts with different rules. Dogs other than service dogs are not allowed in the Upper Park, but may enter the Lower Park under control, as long as they do not chase wildlife or go into the boating lake or the river. Colchester's council also publishes photography charges for High Woods Country Park, so that cost needs planning in.

Epping Forest, the ancient woodland that runs 13 miles into Essex, needs a licence from the City of London Corporation for photography, so a forest walk is not a last-minute choice. For other parks, such as Hainault Forest by Chigwell with its 7.2 km of surfaced paths, we check the current guidance with the park before the day.

Where to walk

Open space for a dog walk session

Essex has a lot of room for a dog to run. Near Brentwood, Weald Country Park covers about 500 acres and Thorndon Park has ancient woodland and parkland with old oak pollards. Norsey Wood, north-east of Billericay, is 166 acres of ancient coppiced woodland, and on the west side of Billericay Lake Meadows offers 40 acres with fishing lakes.

In Basildon, Northlands Park covers around 70 acres with two fishing lakes, and Gloucester Park in the town centre has a 6-acre lake. Down on the Thames at Grays, the riverside stretch known as The Beach was formed from ballast and sand on land the council bought in 1903, and in Southend Chalkwell Park has 67 acres of gardens and open space. For any of these, check the current dog guidance with the park before the day, and bring a towel for after.

Distance and studio

How far Kaushik travels for a pet session

The nearest Essex towns are about 20 miles from the Northwood studio: Loughton is about 20, Chigwell about 21 and Epping about 23. Billericay is about 36 miles away, Southend-on-Sea about 48 and Colchester about 57. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, and the session price is given by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383.

Calm, older dogs and small pets can also visit the studio at 21 Joel Street, Northwood Hills, for portraits against a plain backdrop. It is on the Joel Street parade, two minutes from Northwood Hills station. If the whole family wants to be in the photographs, the Essex family photography page covers sessions with people and pets together.

Planning

Planning around Essex

01

Parndon Wood: lead on, trails off

At the Harlow nature reserve dogs must stay on a lead and are not allowed on the woodland trails, so plan the photographs away from the trails or choose another Harlow space.

02

Langdon's trails need a lead

Essex Wildlife Trust's 461-acre reserve on Lower Dunton Road asks for dogs on a lead on the trails. A long lead lets your dog move among the meadows and lakes.

03

Castle Park: Lower Park only

In Colchester dogs other than service dogs are kept out of the Upper Park, and in the Lower Park they must not chase wildlife or enter the boating lake or river.

04

Epping Forest needs a licence

The City of London Corporation requires a photography licence in the forest, including portrait shoots, so a forest dog walk is arranged well ahead.

05

Hainault's surfaced paths

Hainault Forest by Chigwell has 7.2 km of surfaced paths, firm ground for an older dog, about 21 miles from the studio.

06

High Woods has published charges

Colchester's council publishes photography charges for High Woods Country Park, so that cost goes into the plan alongside travel from Northwood.

Dog walks and parks in Essex

Essex parks and their dog rules; rules can change, so look at the latest guidance before you go.

  • Lake Meadows: Lake Meadows is a 40-acre park on the west side of Billericay with fishing lakes, and it hosts the Billericay Fireworks display; the Friends of Lake Meadows help look after it with Basildon Council and Billericay Town Council. 1
  • Northlands Park: Northlands Park covers around 70 acres and was created by the Basildon Development Corporation in the 1970s on the former Felmore Farm, with two fishing lakes covering eight acres. 2
  • Epping Forest: Epping Forest, which borders Loughton to the west, is an ancient woodland stretching 13 miles from east London into Essex and has been kept as public open space since the Epping Forest Act 1878. 3

Good to know

Pet photography in Essex: questions answered

Only once a licence is in place. The City of London Corporation requires one for photography in Epping Forest, including portrait sessions. If time is short, Hainault Forest by Chigwell, with 7.2 km of surfaced paths, or your own garden are simpler.

No. Parndon Wood Nature Reserve is an ancient oak and hornbeam woodland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and dogs must be on a lead there and are not allowed on the woodland trails. A long lead and a garden session for off-lead running work well together.

The Lower Park, under control. Dogs other than service dogs are not allowed in the Upper Park, and in the Lower Park they must not chase wildlife or go into the boating lake or the river, so we plan the photographs on the open ground.

It can be. The 461-acre reserve has ancient woodland, meadows, lakes and former Plotland gardens, and dogs must be kept on a lead on the trails. Basildon is about 37 miles from Northwood, and travel is set out in your written quote.

Colchester's council publishes photography charges for High Woods Country Park, so check the current figure with the council before the session. The park has 21 always-open pedestrian entrances and two car parks, which makes meeting there easy.

Yes. Weald Country Park covers about 500 acres of former estate, and Thorndon has ancient woodland with old oak pollards. Brentwood is about 31 miles from Northwood, and we check each park's current dog guidance before the day.

An Essex pet session is priced on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383. The figure depends on the location and the number of animals, and the travel from Northwood to your town is shown on its own line.
