The short answer

Is there a photographer who covers all of Essex?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia Photography covers weddings across the whole of Essex and runs family, newborn, portrait, headshot, event, pet and commercial sessions there too. Kaushik travels from the studio in Northwood Hills: Loughton and Chigwell are about 20 to 21 miles away, Chelmsford about 39 and Colchester about 57. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, and any Essex client can choose a studio session instead.

We hired Kaushik for our wedding. He was a fantastic photographer, very professional and great to work with. Kaushik was very flexible with timings, he was patient, and produced amazing photos! We received our photos really quickly and the quality of them are really nice!! His communication throughout was really good and understood what I wanted. My family were also very happy with Kaushik and the photos.

Kaushik Bathia has photographed our family on many occasions and done a fantastic job. His work is displayed all over our family homes and he has captured moments which will be cherished forever. He also managed to get great pictures of my two children (both under 5), a near enough impossible task in itself. We highly recommend!

Google review, 2017

We were a little nervous as it was our first photo shoot but Kaushik was very friendly and quickly had our nerves calmed with his charming personality. A great all round experience and we have some fab professional photos that we are very happy with. Highly recommended, 5 Stars :)

The county

How Essex is laid out from a Northwood studio

Essex is a big county, and the distance from our studio changes a great deal depending on which part you live in. The western edge, in Epping Forest District, sits just outside Greater London: Loughton is inside the M25 at about 20 miles from Northwood Hills, Chigwell is about 21 and Epping about 23. Harlow, on the south bank of the River Stort where Essex meets Hertfordshire, is about 25 miles away. These four towns are the closest part of the county to us.

South Essex is the middle band. Brentwood, a Green Belt commuter town just outside the M25, is about 31 miles away, Grays in Thurrock about 33, Billericay about 36 and Basildon about 37. Chelmsford, the county town and a city since 2012, is about 39 miles from the studio. Further out, Southend-on-Sea on the Thames Estuary is about 48 miles away, and Colchester, the old Roman town of Camulodunum in the north-east, is about 57.

That spread matters because it changes the practical side of a booking. A wedding in Loughton and a wedding near Colchester are the same service, but the day starts at a different hour and the travel line on your quote is different. We would rather you knew that on day one than found it out later.

Two kinds of booking

Weddings anywhere in Essex, sessions brought to your door

Weddings are not limited by distance. Kaushik photographs weddings across the UK, so an Essex wedding in a Chelmsford barn, a Brentwood manor house or a hotel on the Southend seafront is booked in exactly the same way as one round the corner from the studio. Wedding photography starts from £750 and is built into bespoke packages built around the day you are planning.

Sessions work differently. For family, newborn, maternity, couples, portrait, headshot, event, pet and commercial work, Kaushik comes to you: your home, your garden, a local park, your office or your venue. Sessions are offered right across Essex, including the towns over 40 miles away. The honest point is that every Essex session involves a drive from Northwood, so travel is set out in your written quote before anything is booked.

If the travel does not suit, there is a simple alternative. The studio at 21 Joel Street, Northwood Hills, is on the Joel Street parade two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line, and any session can be held there instead. For sessions, ask for a price on 07956 505383 by phone or WhatsApp, and travel is shown alongside it.

West Essex: Loughton, Chigwell, Epping and Harlow

The Epping Forest towns are the easiest part of Essex for us to reach. Epping Forest itself is an ancient woodland that runs 13 miles from east London into Essex and has been public open space since the Epping Forest Act 1878. One planning point catches people out: the City of London Corporation requires a licence for photography in the forest, including portrait sessions, so a forest shoot needs that permission sorted before the date.

Hainault Forest, beside Chigwell, is another surviving piece of the old Forest of Essex, with 7.2 km of surfaced paths. Loughton has three conservation areas and 56 listed buildings, and from the green by the Gardeners Arms on Baldwins Hill there are views towards London, Kent and Surrey on a clear day.

Harlow, designated a new town in 1947, has a very different character. It became the world's first Sculpture Town in 2010, with more than 100 public sculptures including works by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, and Harlow Town Park covers over 160 acres, with a water garden of three cascading ponds at its heart.

Further out

South Essex, Chelmsford, Southend and Colchester

South Essex has two local authorities that run their own affairs. Thurrock, with Grays as its main town, and Southend-on-Sea are both unitary authorities, so they have their own register offices; the rest of the county uses Essex County Council's registration service. Brentwood is on the Elizabeth line, Grays and Basildon are on the c2c line, and Billericay sits on the Greater Anglia branch to Southend Victoria.

Chelmsford is the centre of the county in more ways than one. The Rivers Can and Chelmer meet east of the city centre, Marconi opened the world's first wireless factory here in 1899, and the city has 19 Green Flag parks, the most in the east of England. Essex County Council's main office is at County Hall in Chelmsford.

On the coast, Southend Pier runs 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary, the longest pleasure pier in the world. Colchester, which claims to be Britain's first city, has the largest Norman keep ever built in Europe standing in Castle Park. Both are a long way from Northwood, and both are covered for weddings and sessions, with travel quoted before you commit.

Why Kaushik

What you get from an Essex booking

Kaushik Bathia has run the studio since 2001, which is about 25 years behind the camera, and his work has earned five European Kodak Gold Awards. The business is rated 4.8 from 580+ Google reviews. You deal with Kaushik directly from the first call, through planning, to the finished photographs.

For weddings that means one photographer who plans the day with you, with a second photographer, a pre-wedding shoot or a hand-finished album added if you want them. For sessions it means a plan that fits your home, your children or your office, worked out on the phone before Kaushik sets off from Northwood.

02

Asian wedding photography in Essex

Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati, Tamil and Punjabi weddings in Essex can run over several days and several places, from a mehndi at home to a reception in a hotel ballroom. Kaushik covers each event as a separate part of one plan. The Essex Asian wedding page deals with multi-day logistics, large guest lists and venues that allow your own caterers.

03

Family photography across Essex

Family sessions in Essex happen at home, in the garden or in a park near you, from Hainault Forest and Harlow Town Park to Thorndon Country Park near Brentwood or Castle Park in Colchester. Kaushik brings the kit and works around nap times and school runs. See family photography in Essex for parks, seasons and what to wear, or the national family photography page.

Family photography in Essex
04

Newborn photography at home in Essex

Newborn sessions are usually best in the first two weeks, and Kaushik travels to Essex homes so a new family does not have to go anywhere. The nearest towns are about 20 miles from the studio, Colchester about 57, and the studio stays open as an option. The Essex newborn page covers safety, warmth, timing and siblings in detail.

Newborn photography in Essex
05

Maternity photography in Essex

Maternity sessions are usually booked for the later weeks of pregnancy, at home, in a garden or at the Northwood studio. In Essex a quiet path in Weald Country Park or a lawn at home can work as well as a backdrop. You can book a maternity session and a newborn session together, so one plan covers both visits and the travel for each is quoted in writing.

06

Couples and engagement shoots in Essex

A couples shoot suits an engagement, an anniversary or a pre-wedding session before an Essex wedding. Kaushik can meet you in a park or a historic town centre near home, such as Epping High Street's conservation area, Billericay High Street or the Cliff Gardens in Southend. A pre-wedding shoot also lets you get used to the camera before the day itself.

07

Headshots for Essex businesses

For headshots and corporate headshots, Kaushik sets up a portable studio in your office, so a whole staff group can be photographed in one visit without anyone leaving the building. That works for a Chelmsford office, a Harlow office or a firm in Brentwood. Individuals can also book a headshot at the Northwood studio, which is often simpler for one person.

08

Portrait sessions in Essex

Portrait sessions can be held at home, outdoors or at the studio. Essex has plenty of character for an outdoor portrait: Loughton's conservation areas, the sculptures across Harlow, the water garden in Harlow Town Park or the Roman wall in Colchester's Castle Park. For a plain background and controlled lighting, the Northwood studio is the alternative.

09

Event and christening photography in Essex

Birthdays, anniversaries, engagement parties, corporate events and christenings across Essex are covered at the venue or at home. Kaushik works quietly through the room, covering speeches, guests and the details your hosts planned. See event photography for how coverage is arranged, with travel from Northwood set out in your quote before the date is confirmed.

Event photography in Essex
10

Pet photography in Essex

Pet sessions work well at home or on a walk your dog already knows. Check each park's rules first: dogs must stay on a lead at Parndon Wood in Harlow and are kept off its woodland trails, Langdon near Basildon asks for leads too, and Colchester's Upper Castle Park does not allow dogs apart from service dogs. A garden session avoids all of that.

Pet photography in Essex
11

Commercial and product photography in Essex

Commercial photography covers products, premises, staff and food for Essex businesses, photographed on site or in the Northwood studio. If you want a location such as Epping Forest, the City of London Corporation requires a licence for commercial photography there, and Colchester's council publishes photography charges for High Woods Country Park, so those costs need planning in.

Planning

Planning around Essex

01

Loughton, Chigwell and Epping first

The Epping Forest towns are about 20 to 23 miles from Northwood Hills, the shortest Essex drive we have. A session there is the simplest Essex booking to arrange.

02

Chelmsford is about 39 miles

The county town sits near the middle of Essex. Weddings and sessions there are routine to book, with a written travel line on the quote.

03

Southend and Colchester take planning

At about 48 and 57 miles, the coast and the north-east need an earlier start for weddings and a clear plan for sessions, with the travel for each set out in your written quote.

04

The studio is always an option

Any Essex session can move to 21 Joel Street, two minutes from Northwood Hills station, if the travel does not suit your budget.

05

Two councils run their own registrars

Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea are unitary authorities with their own register offices. The rest of Essex uses the county council's service.
