The short answer

Is there a christening photographer who covers Essex?

Kaushik Bathia photographs christenings, baptisms and naming ceremonies from his Northwood studio. Loughton sits at about 20 miles, the edge of the usual christening range, and almost everywhere else in Essex, from Chigwell to Chelmsford, lies beyond it, so each date is checked first by phone or WhatsApp. Every church sets its own photography rules, so ask the vicar or priest. Travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote, and prices are given by phone or WhatsApp.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Essex, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

Could not be happier with Kaushik's service. He was professional and accommodating and nothing was too much to ask for! In fact, he went above and beyond for my husband's 60th and the final album was just fabulous! Would I use him again? Oh absolutely!!!

Zabeen M., Google review, 2019

Kaushik bhai did the photography for my baby shower and did a phenomenal job! Can't wait to book him for additional events in the future! Thanks for everything!

Rachana P., Google review, 2025

Me and my family had a photo shoot here and I must say Kaushik did a fantastic job. We went to review the photos and they were really good. We will treasure these memories forever.

Distance first

Which parts of Essex are within easy reach

Christening coverage is normally offered at churches, venues and homes within about 20 miles of the Northwood studio, and Essex starts right at that line. Loughton is about 20 miles away and Chigwell about 21, so even the forest side of the county sits at or just past the edge of the usual christening range.

Further east the distances grow: Epping about 23 miles, Harlow about 25, Brentwood about 31, Basildon about 37 and Chelmsford about 39. Those towns are beyond the usual 20-mile christening range, so call or WhatsApp 07956 505383 with the date and the church before anything else, and the date is checked first. If it can be covered, travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.

If the church is too far, a studio portrait in the christening outfit is a calm alternative, taken on a quieter day at Northwood Hills.

In church

From St Mary's in Chigwell to Chelmsford Cathedral

The churches of Essex differ hugely, and so do the conditions inside. St Mary's in Chigwell goes back to the 12th century. Chelmsford Cathedral, the seat of the diocese since 1914, is a Grade I listed church begun around 1200. Brentwood's Roman Catholic cathedral is a classical building by Quinlan Terry, dedicated in 1991, while St Martin's in the centre of Basildon was consecrated in 1962.

Whatever the building, the rule is the same: ask the vicar or priest beforehand what photography is allowed during the service, and where a photographer may stand. Kaushik follows the ceremony quietly within whatever the church permits, and keeps the group photographs for afterwards.

Pass on any guidance the church gives you when you book, so the day is planned around it rather than discovered at the door.

Other traditions

Baptisms, naming ceremonies, a Hindu naming or an aqiqah

Not every Essex family marks a birth in church. A non-religious naming ceremony can be held at home or at a hired venue, with readings, promises from chosen adults and a celebration afterwards; the photographs follow the same pattern of ceremony, groups and gathering.

Families who hold a Hindu naming ceremony, or an aqiqah after the birth of a child, can ask about having the occasion photographed too, whether it is held at home or in a hired hall, with the date checked first for distance. Tell us how the ceremony runs, who leads it and which moments matter most, and Kaushik will plan around the order of the day and any prayers that should not be photographed.

The groups

Godparents, grandparents and the family line-up

The formal groups are the pictures you are likely to frame, so they deserve a short plan. Before the day, send a list: parents with the baby, each set of grandparents, the godparents, and the whole gathering. On the day, one relative who knows everyone can call people forward, which keeps the groups quick so nobody waits in the cold outside the church.

Outside the church door or beside the font both suit these pictures. If the church has a churchyard or green beside it, a few relaxed frames there break up the formal line-up.

Afterwards

The meal at home, in a restaurant or a hall

After the service comes the family meal, whether a lunch at home, a table at a local restaurant or a hired hall. That gathering is where the in-between moments happen: great-grandparents holding the baby, cousins at the cake, a toast from a godparent. Coverage can continue there for as long as you choose.

Tell us the address of the meal as well as the church when you get in touch, because the two together shape the timings and the travel. For larger celebrations, the Essex event photography page explains how longer coverage works, and the Essex family page covers a portrait session later in the year.

Planning

Planning around Essex

01

Check the date first

For a church beyond Loughton or Chigwell, call or WhatsApp with the date and church before you plan further, so you know whether it can be covered.

02

Ask the vicar or priest

Each Essex church sets its own photography rules for the service. Ask in advance and pass on what they tell you.

03

Send a group list

Parents, grandparents, godparents and the whole family: a short list keeps the groups quick after the service.

04

Give both addresses

The church and the meal together set the timings, and the travel from Northwood is set out in writing before you book.

05

Studio as a fallback

If the church is too far, a christening-outfit portrait at the Northwood studio gives you the photographs without the journey.

Good to know

Christening photography in Essex: questions answered

Loughton, at about 20 miles, is on the edge of the usual christening range, and Chigwell, at about 21, is just past it. Call or WhatsApp with the date and church so the date can be checked first, and if it can be covered, the travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote.

Call first with the date. Chelmsford is about 39 miles from the studio, beyond the usual christening area, so Kaushik will tell you plainly whether the day can be covered. The cathedral, like any church, sets its own rules for photography during the service.

That depends on the church. Ask the vicar beforehand what is allowed and where a photographer may stand, and Kaushik follows that guidance quietly. Group photographs are taken after the service.

You can ask. These are photographed at home or at a hall where the date and distance allow, and most of Essex is beyond the usual 20-mile range, so each date is checked first. Tell us how the ceremony runs and which moments matter, and any prayers that should not be photographed will be respected.

Where the day is covered, yes. Coverage can continue at your home, a restaurant or a hall for as long as you choose. Give us both addresses so the timings and travel can be planned together.

An Essex christening is priced on request by phone or WhatsApp, according to the hours of coverage and the prints or album you want. Travel is set out separately in your written quote.

Yes. A studio family portrait in the christening outfit, at Northwood Hills on a quieter day, is a calm alternative. It moves at the baby's pace, with time for feeds and cuddles.
