The short answer

Do you photograph christenings in Kent?

Ask about your date first. Kaushik Bathia photographs christenings, baptisms, naming ceremonies and blessings, following the service quietly where the church allows it, then the family groups and the meal afterwards. Kent lies beyond the usual 20-mile christening range, starting at about 30 miles at Dartford, so each date is checked first by phone or WhatsApp. If it can be covered, travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote before you book.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Kent, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

Thank you Kaushik for the amazing photos you took for us at our family event last weekend. The photos were excellent quality and we received them in a timely manner. Highly recommend!

Could not be happier with Kaushik's service. He was professional and accommodating and nothing was too much to ask for! In fact, he went above and beyond for my husband's 60th and the final album was just fabulous! Would I use him again? Oh absolutely!!!

Zabeen M., Google review, 2019

I would HIGHLY recommend Northwood Hills Studios to anyone who wants to do family photos or special occasion photos.

Before anything else

Ask the vicar or priest about photography in your Kent church

Every church sets its own rules for photographs during a service, and they can differ from one parish to the next. Some are happy for discreet pictures throughout; others prefer none during the baptism and allow a few frames at the font once the service has finished. The vicar or priest is the person who decides, so ask them when you arrange the date.

Pass on whatever they say and Kaushik works within it, staying close enough to follow the ceremony without getting in anyone's way. If the answer is no photographs during the service at all, the family groups afterwards, a few pictures at the font and the gathering later still make a complete set.

Our national christening photography page explains how the day is photographed in general.

Kent churches

From St Martin's in Canterbury to All Saints' in Maidstone

Kent has some of the oldest places of Christian worship in England. St Martin's Church in Canterbury, where Queen Bertha worshipped before St Augustine's mission of 597, is the oldest English church building still in use for worship, and its walls include reused Roman brick and tile. Rochester Cathedral has been a place of Christian worship since AD 604.

In Maidstone, All Saints' Church was built in 1395 as the collegiate church beside the Archbishop's Palace, and both are Grade I listed. In Tunbridge Wells, the Church of King Charles the Martyr dates from 1684. In Gravesend, St George's Church is where Pocahontas was buried in 1617, and a replica of her Jamestown statue was dedicated there in 1958.

Whether your family's church is one of these or a village church, the practical questions are the same: where the font sits, how the family moves around it, and where the family can gather outside for the groups. A quick look at the church before the day, or a few photos from you on WhatsApp, helps us plan.

Other traditions

Naming ceremonies, blessings and an aqiqah

Not every welcome for a new baby happens in church. A Hindu naming ceremony can take place at home or in a temple with close family, and an aqiqah can be marked with a family meal. Non-religious naming days are held at home or at a hired venue. Each has its own order of events, so tell us what will happen and when, and the coverage is planned around it.

For any ceremony at a place of worship, the photography rules of that place are followed in full. Let us know your temple, mosque or church and any guidance it gives, and we plan around it.

If you would rather not have a photographer at the ceremony, a studio family portrait in the christening or naming outfit is a calm alternative. The studio is warm, and the session moves at the baby's pace with time for feeds and cuddles.

After the service

Godparents, grandparents and the family meal afterwards

Straight after the service comes the list of family groups: parents with the baby, godparents, grandparents and then the wider family. Agree the list before the day and name one relative who knows everyone, so the groups move quickly and nobody waits about in the cold.

Then comes the meal or the gathering, at home, in a church hall or at a restaurant. This is where the relaxed pictures happen: cousins playing, a grandparent holding the baby, the cake being cut, the godparents' speech if there is one. Coverage can follow the family there if the timings and distance work.

For bigger celebrations that run on into the evening, the event photography in Kent page covers parties and gatherings in more detail.

Distance and booking

Kent is beyond the usual christening radius: what that means for your date

Christenings near the studio are covered within about 20 miles of Northwood. The nearest Kent towns start at about 30 miles, with Dartford the closest of the larger ones and Canterbury about 68 miles away, so a Kent christening is arranged date by date rather than as standard. Call or WhatsApp 07956 505383 with the date, the church and the time of the service, and we will tell you whether it can be covered.

When it can, travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, alongside the coverage. The coverage price is given on request and depends on how long you need and what you would like to take home, from an edited gallery to prints and albums, including copies for the grandparents.

The edited christening gallery arrives within a few working days. For family portraits at other times of year, see family photography in Kent, and for every service in the county, the Kent photographer page.

Planning

Planning around Kent

01

Ask the vicar first

Photography during a service is decided by the vicar or priest. Ask when you book the date and pass on what they say.

02

Check your date early

Kent is outside the usual 20-mile christening area, so check by phone or WhatsApp that your date can be covered.

03

Agree the group list

Write down the family groups before the day and choose one relative to gather people outside the church.

04

Tell us the meal plan

Say where the family is going after the service, so the coverage can include the gathering if the timings work.

05

Studio as an alternative

A studio portrait in the christening outfit suits families who would rather not have a photographer at the service.
