Coverage can run from the haldi or pithi at home through the sangeet and garba, the mandap ceremony and pheras, to the reception and vidaai. Packages start from £750. Would 100% recommend Kaushik Bathia Photography! Kaushik and his team photographed all my wedding functions and I couldn't be happier with the results. He listened to us, got to know our family and close one's and captured all the special moments. We had a great mixture of romantic portraits and natural candid photos of the ceremony. Thank you so much for the most beautiful, treasured wedding photos!

The Kent map

Where the events of a Hindu wedding in Kent tend to fall

Kent is a long county, and for a wedding that runs over several days its shape matters. The north-west corner near the Thames sits closest to our Northwood studio, with Dartford about 30 miles away and the Dartford Crossing carrying the A282 over to Thurrock. Further in along the river come the Medway towns, where Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester, Strood and Rainham run into one another, and then Maidstone, the county town.

West Kent runs south from Sevenoaks through Tonbridge to Royal Tunbridge Wells on the East Sussex border, and east Kent reaches Ashford and Canterbury, the longest journey from Northwood at about 68 miles. A pithi at a family home in Dartford, a mandap ceremony in Medway and a reception near Maidstone is a perfectly realistic Kent plan, and each address goes into one written quote with the travel listed day by day.

Because the county stretches so far, we ask early which town each event is in. Two functions on one day at opposite ends of Kent, say a pithi in Tonbridge and a sangeet in Canterbury, need the gap between them worked out in advance, not guessed on the morning. Local detail for each town sits on pages such as Hindu weddings in Dartford and Hindu weddings in Maidstone.

The days before

Pithi, mehndi, sangeet and garba in Kent homes and halls

Most Hindu weddings begin at home. In Gujarati families that often means the mandvo mahurat and Ganesh sthapana, followed by the pithi, when aunts, cousins and grandparents rub turmeric paste onto the bride or groom and nobody stays clean for long. Front rooms and gardens are small and busy, so Kaushik keeps the camera low and out of the way of the elders doing the ritual.

The mehndi evening is about detail and conversation: the henna artist's patterns, initials hidden somewhere in the design, and relatives taking turns to sit and talk while the henna dries. A sangeet or garba night is the opposite, with dhol, dandiya sticks and a packed dance floor in a community hall. The floor moves fast, so Kaushik works from the edges and steps in when the circles of dancers open up.

These evenings are frequently in a different Kent town from the main ceremony, perhaps a garba in Gravesend on the Friday and the wedding near Tunbridge Wells on the Sunday. Each day is priced on its own, so you can choose full coverage for some and a shorter visit for others. The wider planning picture for every tradition is on our Asian wedding photography in Kent page.

Under the mandap

Photographing the ceremony at a Kent mandir, hall or hotel

The main day usually opens with the baraat or jaan, the groom's procession, and in Gujarati weddings the bride's mother greets him with the ponkhvu at the entrance. Then come the jaimala, the kanyadaan, the hasta melap as the couple's hands are joined, and the havan. In the pheras the couple walk around the sacred fire, and in many Gujarati weddings the saptapadi, the seven steps, then follows as a separate rite. Sindoor, the mangalsutra and the blessings from both families close the ceremony before the vidaai.

Kaushik keeps his shoes off near the mandap, never steps onto it, and agrees with the maharaj or pandit before the start where he may stand. Havan smoke and a canopy of flowers make the light under a mandap tricky, so a longer lens from the side aisle and a second angle from the back keep the priest's view and the guests' view clear. If a second photographer is booked, one covers faces and the other covers hands and ritual detail.

If your ceremony is at a mandir, send us its address and ask the committee about photography in the shrine room and any areas that are closed to cameras. Whatever they ask is what we follow, and the national Hindu weddings guide explains the ceremony order in more depth.

The legal ceremony

Pairing the Hindu ceremony with a Kent register office

In England the religious ceremony is not always the legal marriage, so you may also want a civil ceremony. In most of the county these are run by Kent County Council's ceremony service, A Kentish Ceremony, which lists seven register offices, among them Oakwood House in Maidstone and Wellington House in Canterbury. Oakwood House is a Victorian mansion in mature gardens with the Kentish Suite for up to 80 guests, a Garden Room with a terrace for up to 40 and a panelled Study for up to 15.

Closer to London, the Manor Gatehouse on Priory Road in Dartford is the surviving part of the manor house Henry VIII built in 1541 to 1544, later given to Anne of Cleves. Its Manor Room holds 35, and the county council offers its walled garden and facade for photographs. Medway is a separate authority, and Medway Register Office at Northgate in Rochester, a short walk from the castle and cathedral, has a Library Room for 50 and a Statutory Room for six.

A civil ceremony a few weeks before the main wedding is often the quietest part of the whole celebration: parents, siblings and a handful of friends, with time afterwards for portraits that a busy mandap day cannot allow. Kaushik can photograph it as part of your package or on its own, in Indian outfits or western ones, and the travel from Northwood to that register office goes into the same written quote.

After the pheras

Reception, vidaai and portraits around Kent's landmarks

A Hindu reception at one of Kent's larger venues can run to about 250 guests, with a grand entrance, speeches, the cake, a first dance and a long queue of relatives waiting to reach the stage. We ask for a short written list of family groups and one helper from each side, so the stage photographs move quickly and the couple get back to eating and dancing. Coverage end times are agreed in advance, so you know exactly when the camera stops.

The vidaai is the moment many parents ask about first. The bride throws rice over her shoulder towards her family home and leaves with her new husband, and the faces around her tell the story. If the griha pravesh, the welcome into the couple's new family home, follows that night in another Kent town or back across London, tell us when you enquire and we will plan the extra time and travel into the quote.

For couple portraits on the day or at a pre-wedding shoot, Kent's history offers real variety. In Maidstone, All Saints' Church dates from 1395 and sits beside the Archbishop's Palace, both Grade I listed. Rochester Castle's Norman keep of Kentish ragstone still stands 113 feet high, and the Georgian colonnade of the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells dates from after a fire in 1687. More towns are on the Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury Hindu wedding pages.

Planning

Planning around Kent

01

List every event by town

Kent runs from Dartford to Canterbury, about 30 to 68 miles from Northwood. A list of each function, its town and its start time lets us plan the gaps and quote travel properly.

02

Ask the mandir about cameras

Committees set their own rules on cameras in the shrine room and where a photographer may stand. Ask for them when you book the hall and send them on to us.

03

Decide on the civil ceremony

If the legal marriage is at a Kent register office, choose whether it falls before the main day or on it, so coverage can be planned around both.

04

Prepare the stage list

Large Kent receptions mean long stage queues. A written list of family groups and a helper from each side keeps photographs moving and the evening on time.

Yes. Kaushik photographs Gujarati weddings anywhere in Kent, including the mandvo mahurat, pithi, garba, the jaan and ponkhvu, the mangal pheras and the vidaai. Tell us which rituals your family is planning, and in which towns, and we will build a running order and a written quote around them.

As many as you need, from a single ceremony to a full week of pithi, mehndi, sangeet, wedding and reception. Each day is priced separately with its own travel line from Northwood, so you can mix full days with shorter visits to keep the total where you want it.

Kaushik has about 25 years behind the camera and agrees positions with the maharaj or pandit before the ceremony starts. He stays off the mandap, keeps his shoes off nearby and uses a longer lens so the priest and your guests always have a clear view.

That depends on where your family lives and how many guests you want. Oakwood House in Maidstone takes up to 80, the Manor Gatehouse in Dartford 35 and Wellington House in Canterbury 25, while Medway Register Office in Rochester is run by Medway Council. Book directly with the office you choose.

Kent towns are roughly 30 to 68 miles from our Northwood studio. The travel for each day, to each address, is calculated and shown as its own line in your written quote before you book, so you can see exactly what each event costs to reach.

Yes. A pre-wedding shoot is an optional extra and can take place at a Kent landmark, a park near home or the Northwood studio. It helps couples get comfortable in front of the camera before a long, busy wedding day.

Summer weekends and auspicious dates are in demand, and a multi-day wedding ties up several dates at once, so enquiring a year or more ahead keeps the most dates open. Send every date and town through the form and we will reply with availability and a written quote.
