The short answer

Do you photograph Hindu weddings in the West Midlands?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs Hindu and Gujarati weddings across the West Midlands, from Foleshill in Coventry, about 73 miles from the Northwood studio, to Wolverhampton, close to 100 miles away. Coverage can follow the Ganesh puja, haldi, sangeet, the pheras at the mandap and the vidaai. Packages start from £750 and are built around your events. When rituals run on consecutive days, an overnight stay is usually sensible and set out in your written quote.

Would 100% recommend Kaushik Bathia Photography! Kaushik and his team photographed all my wedding functions and I couldn't be happier with the results. He listened to us, got to know our family and close one's and captured all the special moments. We had a great mixture of romantic portraits and natural candid photos of the ceremony. Thank you so much for the most beautiful, treasured wedding photos!

…Kaushik is incredibly talented, artistic, and truly gifted with a photographer’s vision. He knows exactly what he wants each frame to look like and how to get the best out of his subjects. Honestly, there were moments during the shoot when I’d wonder, “What is he making me do?” – but when I saw the final shots, I was blown away. Every image looked beautiful, intentional, and natural.

I have known Kaushik for almost 20 years & in the recent years has been doing various photo projects, where he has been responsive & professional. Highly recommended him.

Nearest to the studio

Foleshill and Coventry: the closest Hindu wedding city to Northwood

Of all the West Midlands cities, Coventry is the one nearest our studio, at about 73 miles. Its northern suburb of Foleshill had 22,478 residents in 2021 and is the only one of the city's 18 wards where non-white residents are the majority. Alongside its mosques and gurdwaras, Foleshill has a Sanatan Dharm Hindu temple, so a family there may hold a puja at home and the religious ceremony a few streets away.

That short distance between home and temple changes the shape of the morning. Instead of a long convoy, the family can walk or drive a few minutes, and we can photograph the last blessings at the house and still reach the temple before the pandit begins. Tell us the start time the temple has given you, and we work backwards from it to set the time we arrive for the preparations.

Coventry also has its own register office in the Gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor on New Union Street, which matters if you want the legal ceremony close to home. We cover that further down the page.

Before the wedding day

Ganesh puja, pithi and sangeet in homes from Solihull to Walsall

A Hindu wedding in this region can move between several buildings. The Ganesh puja that opens the celebrations can be held at the family home, with the pandit, the parents and the closest relatives. A Gujarati pithi or a haldi follows, loud and messy, with turmeric on hands, faces and anything nearby. The sangeet, which at a Gujarati celebration can include garba and dandiya, then needs a hall big enough for the whole extended family to dance.

Because the boroughs run into one another, those events can easily fall in three different council areas. A puja at a house in Solihull, a sangeet at a hall in Birmingham and the wedding in Wolverhampton is a realistic plan, and a straightforward one to photograph if we have every address early. Solihull is about 81 miles from Northwood, Birmingham about 88 and Wolverhampton close to 100.

If two events fall on the same day at both family homes, a second photographer can cover the other family's preparations at the same time, so neither house misses its blessings.

At the mandap

Photographing the pheras, the kanyadaan and the saptapadi

In the West Midlands as anywhere, the order of the ceremony varies by family and pandit, so we go through yours beforehand and the photographs follow it. The jaimala garland exchange may come early or later, and sometimes relatives lift the couple so the garlands are harder to reach. The kanyadaan, the hastamelap with hands joined and the pheras take their places in the sequence your pandit sets. The couple circles the sacred fire during the pheras; in many Gujarati weddings the saptapadi, the seven steps, is then taken as its own rite.

We ask for that running order in advance and, where possible, talk it through with your pandit as well. Knowing which side the family will sit, where the fire stands and when the sindoor and mangalsutra come lets Kaushik choose his positions ahead of time rather than moving across the mandap mid-ritual.

Your temple or hall may have its own rules about where photographers stand and when the camera stays down. Ask for them when you book the date, send them to us, and we follow them on the day without discussion.

The legal ceremony

Cheylesmore Manor, Holliday Street or the Civic Centre for the civil marriage

A Hindu ceremony in a temple or hall is not usually a legal marriage in England on its own, so a civil ceremony is normally added. In Coventry it takes place in the Gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor, where the Black Prince Room seats up to 50. Birmingham's register office is on Holliday Street near the Mailbox, and Wolverhampton's City Suite at the Civic Centre on St Peter's Square holds up to 62 guests.

The civil part can be a small morning booking a few days or weeks before the main celebration, with close family in smart clothes rather than full wedding outfits. Kaushik can photograph it as part of the wedding package or as a short booking on its own, quoted separately with its own travel line.

If you are combining both on one day, put the register office first and leave a gap before the mandap. Even a short civil ceremony needs time for the signing, a few family groups outside and the drive across the city.

Portraits and parks

War Memorial Park, Bantock Park and West Park for couple portraits

Hindu weddings leave little spare time, so portraits work best where they are close at hand. In Coventry, War Memorial Park on Kenilworth Road is a Green Flag park with the city's war memorial and a Community Sensory Garden. Coombe Abbey Park at Binley, a Capability Brown landscape with formal gardens, a moat and lakes, books commercial photography through the park, so check with the park office before planning a session there.

On the Wolverhampton side, Bantock Park has restored gardens around Bantock House Museum and a quieter western section with hedgerows and a nature trail. West Park, opened in 1881 and Grade II* listed, has a lake within a ten-minute walk of the city centre. Twenty minutes in either is enough for a set of couple portraits in your wedding clothes between the ceremony and the reception.

Town guides

Hindu wedding pages for West Midlands towns

Each town page has more local detail: Hindu weddings in Coventry, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Solihull and Walsall. For how Kaushik approaches each ritual, read the national Hindu weddings page.

If your celebration includes Sikh or Muslim family, or a civil wedding as well, the Asian weddings in the West Midlands page covers multi-faith planning, and the West Midlands wedding photography guide covers every borough's register office. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, whichever town you choose.

Planning

Planning around West Midlands

01

Send the pandit's running order

Ask your pandit for the order of rituals and the muhurat time. Kaushik plans his positions around the mandap from it, so nothing important happens while he is moving.

02

Coventry is the shortest trip

At about 73 miles, Coventry is the nearest West Midlands city to Northwood. A one-day wedding there may not need a night away, depending on the start time.

03

Get the temple's photography rules

Temples and halls set their own guidance on where photographers stand. Ask when you book the date and pass it on, and we follow it.

04

Plan the civil ceremony room

Coventry's Black Prince Room seats up to 50 and Wolverhampton's City Suite up to 62. Match the room to the family you want there.

05

Check park permissions first

Coombe Abbey Park books commercial photography through the park, so a portrait session there needs arranging before the day.

Places for a Hindu wedding day in West Midlands

Community and landmark notes for the West Midlands, useful when you plan where each ritual and each portrait session happens.

  • Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick: In 1961 the Sikh community bought the disused Congregational church on Smethwick High Street and converted it into what is now the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick. 1
  • South Asian community: West Bromwich saw substantial Commonwealth immigration in the 1950s and 1960s, mostly from the Indian subcontinent, with a significant number of Afro-Caribbean settlers too. 2
  • Malvern and Brueton Parks: Malvern and Brueton Parks in Solihull town centre form one Green Flag park with formal gardens and a play area at the Malvern end, and a lake, woodland, local nature reserve and tree trail at the Brueton end. 3
  • Register office courtyard garden: Birmingham Register Office's standard ceremony package includes photo opportunities when the register is signed and afterwards in the office's courtyard garden. 4
  • Lightwoods Park and House: Lightwoods Park in Bearwood covers almost 12 hectares and, after a £5.2 million lottery-funded restoration, has Shakespeare Gardens, a Grade II listed bandstand and a Grade II listed house. 5

Good to know

Hindu weddings in West Midlands: questions answered

Yes, with the temple's agreement. Foleshill in northern Coventry has a Sanatan Dharm Hindu temple, and Coventry is about 73 miles from the Northwood studio. Tell us any photography guidance the temple gives, and we plan the pheras and the family photographs around it.

Yes. Gujarati pithi, mandvo, garba and dandiya are all part of the coverage, along with the wedding at the mandap. Birmingham is about 88 miles from Northwood and Wolverhampton close to 100. Each event is listed in your quote with its own hours, and the drive is shown on its own line.

When the puja, sangeet and wedding fall on consecutive days, an overnight stay between them is usually the sensible plan at this distance. It is set out in your written quote before you book, so you can see what it adds and decide.

Yes. Coventry's register office ceremonies take place in the Gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor on New Union Street, with rooms for 50, 18 or 8 guests. A short civil booking the day before the mandap works well, and Kaushik can photograph both.

For a West Midlands Hindu wedding, coverage starts from £750. Packages are built around your day, so a multi-day wedding is priced by the events, hours and extras you choose, such as a second photographer or a hand-finished album. Travel from Northwood sits in the same written quote.

West Park is a listed Victorian park with a lake about ten minutes' walk from the city centre, and Bantock Park has restored gardens around Bantock House Museum. Either suits a short portrait session between the ceremony and the reception.

Yes. At the 2021 census 4.2 per cent of people in Walsall's built-up area were Hindu. Walsall is about 95 miles from Northwood, and its register office at the Civic Centre on Hatherton Road suits a small civil ceremony before the religious one.
