Planning the map

Leeds, Huddersfield and Wakefield: three centres for one Hindu wedding

West Yorkshire is a county of separate cities and towns rather than one centre. Leeds is the largest, a former wool town granted city status in 1893; Huddersfield is the Kirklees mill town on the M62; Wakefield is the cathedral city on the River Calder. A Hindu wedding here can easily involve all three, with family homes in one, a hall in another and a hotel reception in the third.

That makes a timetable more useful than a shot list. Send us each event's address and start time, and we work out the movements, the light and the gaps for portraits. Wakefield is about 151 miles from Northwood, Huddersfield about 153 and Leeds about 159, and the drive between them is part of the plan.

If both families come from different traditions, the Asian weddings in West Yorkshire page covers combined Hindu, Sikh and Muslim celebrations.

Before the mandap

Ganesh puja, pithi and a sangeet night

The run-up to a Hindu wedding has its own photographs. The Ganesh puja can take place at home with the priest and the immediate family, asking for the wedding to go smoothly. The pithi or haldi follows, a messy, cheerful afternoon of turmeric paste, and in a Gujarati family the mandvo ceremony may be held at the house as well.

The sangeet or garba is the loudest night of the week. Family performances, dandiya sticks and a crowded floor call for a photographer who keeps moving, then steps back for the big group dances. In a Leeds or Huddersfield community hall, check the closing time, as it decides how late the coverage can run.

Each pre-wedding event is priced on its own line, so the quote follows the events you choose.

At the mandap

The havan, the pheras and the saptapadi

The order of the ceremony varies by family and pandit, so we go through yours with you and the priest beforehand. After the baraat and the milni at the door, the rituals at the mandap can include the jaimala, the kanyadaan, with the parents placing the couple's hands together, and the hastamelap, which ties the ends of their garments.

During the pheras the couple circles the sacred fire, and in a Gujarati wedding the saptapadi, the seven steps, often follows as a separate rite. These steps happen close to the fire and the seated elders, so Kaushik agrees a position with the priest beforehand that keeps the elders' view clear.

Sindoor, the mangalsutra and the blessings of the elders end the ceremony. Our national Hindu weddings page lists the full order of rituals for families still deciding which to keep.

The civil side

Leeds Civic Hall, the Lofthouse Suite or Huddersfield Town Hall

A Hindu ceremony in a hotel or hall usually needs a separate civil marriage to be legal. In Leeds, register office ceremonies take place at the Civic Hall on Calverley Street, where the West Room seats up to 38 guests and the Banquet Hall up to 90 on Saturdays. The Civic Hall has no parking of its own, and guests normally enter through the front doors on Millennium Square.

Wakefield Register Office is at the Town Hall on Wood Street, and its Lofthouse Suite, with two ornate fireplaces, chandeliers and a grandfather clock, seats up to 45 guests. In Kirklees, the registration service holds ceremonies in a Victorian-style room at Huddersfield Town Hall that seats 30 plus the couple, with larger town hall rooms for 30 to 200.

A civil ceremony can be quoted as a short separate booking, either on the wedding weekend or a few weeks before it.

Portraits

Lakes and abbey ruins: Roundhay, Kirkstall and Newmillerdam

Between the vidaai and the reception there can be an hour that can be used for couple portraits. Roundhay Park, three miles north of Leeds city centre, covers more than 700 acres with lakes, woodland and formal gardens. Kirkstall Abbey, a ruined Cistercian monastery founded around 1152, stands in a public park on the north bank of the River Aire.

Near Wakefield, Newmillerdam Country Park has a central lake with a 1.5-mile lakeside path and a Boathouse from the 1820s, 3.5 miles south of the city on the A61. Thornes Park, less than a mile from Wakefield city centre, has a walled garden, conservatory and duck lake.

Heavy wedding outfits and jewellery slow everyone down, so allow half an hour on site plus the drive.

Planning

Planning around West Yorkshire

01

Plan Civic Hall arrivals

Leeds Civic Hall has no parking of its own and guests enter from Millennium Square, so tell elderly relatives where to be dropped off.

02

Book the Banquet Hall for a Saturday

The Leeds Civic Hall Banquet Hall takes up to 90 guests on Saturdays only, which suits a larger civil ceremony on the wedding weekend.

03

Agree a spot with the priest

Ask the priest where a photographer may stand during the havan and pheras, and send us the answer before the day.

04

Time the Roundhay stop

Roundhay Park is three miles from Leeds city centre. Add the drive and thirty minutes to the timetable if you want lakeside portraits.

05

Give every address

List the house, the hall and the hotel for each event, so the drive between Leeds, Huddersfield and Wakefield is planned.
