…Kaushik is incredibly talented, artistic, and truly gifted with a photographer’s vision. He knows exactly what he wants each frame to look like and how to get the best out of his subjects. Honestly, there were moments during the shoot when I’d wonder, “What is he making me do?” – but when I saw the final shots, I was blown away. Every image looked beautiful, intentional, and natural.

Kirklees

Dewsbury and Batley: the nikah at home

Dewsbury is a Kirklees town on the main line between Leeds and Huddersfield, and at the 2021 census 44.4% of its 63,722 residents were Asian. A nikah in Dewsbury or Batley can be held at the family home or at a local mosque, with the imam, the witnesses and close family in the room. Kaushik works from the side of the room during the ijab-e-qubool and the signing of the nikah-nama, and moves closer only once the dua has finished.

Tell us the mosque, if the nikah is held there, and any photography guidance from its committee. We plan around it rather than asking on the day.

Dewsbury has its own appointment-only register office outstation at the Town Hall, run by Kirklees Registration Service, where a Victorian-style ceremony room seats 30 guests plus the couple. During restoration work after flooding and roof damage, some ceremonies are moved to another room in the building, so confirm the room when you book.

Respectful coverage

Modesty, prayers and the moments that stay private

Every family draws its own lines, and Kaushik works to them. Before the wedding we go through each event and agree which moments you want photographed, which should stay private and whether any guests would rather not appear. The camera goes down when salah begins, and stays down until prayers end.

For some families that means full portraits of the couple and both families; for others it means detail photographs of the henna, the mahr and the stage, with few faces. Either approach can be planned, and the agreement holds through every event.

Bradford

Walima receptions in a city of 32% Asian residents

In the 2021 census, 32.1% of Bradford's population identified as Asian or Asian British. Some of the city's banqueting venues are built around Asian weddings, with a private nikah suite, a separate mehndi space or a halal-certified kitchen, and rooms for up to 500 guests.

A walima at that scale needs a plan for the stage. We ask for the order of family groups and timings for the couple's entrance and the meal, so the stage photographs happen without holding up dinner. A second photographer can photograph guests and tables while Kaushik covers the stage.

The legal marriage

Bradford City Hall's Priestley Suite and its one-photographer rule

Couples who want a civil ceremony alongside the nikah can book Bradford's register office on the ground floor of City Hall. The larger Priestley Suite seats up to 34 guests plus the couple and two witnesses, and allows one designated photographer during the ceremony, so name Kaushik on the booking and ask guests to keep their phones away.

In Leeds, register office ceremonies take place at the Civic Hall on Calverley Street, and in Wakefield the Lofthouse Suite at the Town Hall seats up to 45. Each of these suits a short civil ceremony on a weekday before the nikah weekend.

A civil ceremony is priced as a small separate booking in your quote.

Portraits

City Park, Cartwright Hall and Crow Nest Park for couple photographs

A walima day can leave little time for the couple alone, so a portrait session earlier in the day is worth planning. In Bradford, the Mirror Pool in City Park has 100 fountains and a main jet reaching over 100 ft, and Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Lister Park, opened in 1904, gives a grand stone setting about a mile from the centre.

In Dewsbury, Crow Nest Park opened to the public in 1893 on the grounds of a 16th-century country house estate, on a hillside with views, an ornamental lake and a walled wildflower garden. Oakwell Hall Country Park in Birstall, with its Elizabethan manor house and 110 acres, is a short drive away.

If the family prefers portraits indoors, a quiet room at the venue works just as well.

Planning

Planning around West Yorkshire

01

Name your photographer at City Hall

The Priestley Suite allows one designated photographer during the ceremony. Put Kaushik's name on the booking.

02

Confirm the Dewsbury room

Some Dewsbury Town Hall ceremonies move rooms during restoration. Check which room you have before sending us the timetable.

03

Write the stage order down

For a Bradford walima of several hundred, list the family groups in order, so the stage photographs run on time.

04

Agree what stays private

Tell us any moments or guests that should not be photographed, and Kaushik works to that list all day.

05

Plan a Crow Nest portrait stop

Crow Nest Park sits on a hillside in Dewsbury Moor. Add thirty minutes and the drive to the day if you want portraits there.
