It runs short, it is largely seated, the faces that matter are angled away from you, and the audible instant that changes everything has passed before a shutter reacts to it. So we pre-focus, we stop moving, and we accept two or three real frames rather than forty. Wherever the imam wants the camera down, down it goes, without any discussion at all.

Then the gear changes completely. A walima puts the couple on a raised stage a long way down the room, which is a distance problem before it is anything else: too remote for a bare flash, too public for a tripod in the aisle. So the light gets built first, the entrance route gets rehearsed, and tables are photographed while people are still sitting at them rather than after everyone scatters. Whatever mehndi night precedes the weekend will be the loosest thing anyone shoots. Rukhsati at the close is the moment nobody performs.
