Bangladeshi families often build the ceremony around a longer, more elaborate seating of the couple, and knowing that in advance changes where we stand before the first word is spoken. Signing the nikah-nama is a moment families always ask for, and we photograph the pen, the register and the hands of the couple as the marriage is set down.
Sehra bandi puts the groom at the centre of his brothers and uncles for a few minutes, and that tying of the sehra is one of the most photographable moments of the morning. Qawwali or a live singer changes the whole character of a dholki, and where we are covering it we work with the musicians rather than around them so the performance is properly recorded. Baraat coverage is done on foot inside the procession, keeping pace with the dhol and the dancing, then turning at the gates to catch the other family waiting to receive it.

Multi-day Muslim weddings suit our approach, and we settle in early so the mehndi, the dholki and the morning preparations each get proper coverage. Henna is at its darkest on the morning after the mehndi, so that is when we photograph the hands and feet properly, before the day gets hold of everyone.
Following the wedding from the baraat through to the rukhsati, we pace ourselves so the emotion holds across the whole album. Sunset usually falls somewhere in the middle of the evening, and stepping outside for five minutes at that point produces portraits that nothing inside the hall can match.
