Two commissions happen to land on a single date whenever a Sikh wedding runs in Bradford. Inside the hall, nothing about the space belongs to you: which position a camera is granted, the level it sits at and the light falling on everybody had all been decided well before you booked anything. Accuracy and invisibility make up the entire brief there. Nobody thanks a photographer for a beautiful frame that required walking.

Evening inverts the lot. In a large private room the ceiling and the wall colour turn into problems to solve rather than conditions to accept, and how the reception looks comes down to choices we make and can get wrong. So they get planned as two shoots, with separate kit lists and often separate people, and we would add an extra photographer sooner than carry stands into somewhere they have no business being.

Reverence for the Guru Granth Sahib determines every sightline in that building, and where a photographer kneels follows from it, never from taste. We ask the sewadars first, then stay exactly where they put us. Laavan repeat four times, and one round differs from the last only in who is standing and what their faces are doing, so variation has to arrive through framing. Palla in hand, two people are joined and the room settles; the settling is the photograph, not the walking.

Outside, the day loosens considerably. Milni arrives early, at speed, often outdoors beside parked cars, two families meeting in pairs where a retake is not on offer. Langar deserves proper coverage and is easily skipped over. At doli the available light is spent and nobody is managing their face any more, so we stay close, stay quiet, and point the camera at relatives instead of at the vehicle.

Kirtan demands stillness from us and the reception demands the reverse, so what matters is switching between them cleanly. Arriving, we already know whether the coming hour belongs to the hall or to the party, our clothing suits the hall rather than the party, and anything noisy stays in the boot until the ceremony has genuinely finished.

Are you able to work without flash near the Guru Granth Sahib?+

Yes. That passage is shot on available light using fast primes, and we would sooner push a sensor hard than raise anything on a stand. A dark hall returns grainier, quieter frames, which honestly suits the subject.

Will you capture all four laavan during the ceremony?+

All four. Each round is covered from the position we were granted, with variety coming out of framing rather than out of walking about. We watch the families through them too, since visible reaction usually lives there.

What if you have never worked at our gurdwara before?+

Then we ask, months out. One phone call to whoever runs the building settles which positions a camera may take and what is expected of us on arrival. Custom differs between congregations more than couples anticipate, so nothing gets assumed.

Who will actually be behind the camera at our wedding?+

The person you met and booked. Where a second shooter joins for the morning, you meet them beforehand as well. Handing the lead role to a stranger and mentioning it afterwards is not something we do.

How far ahead should we book a Sikh wedding photographer in Bradford?+
