A gurdwara morning, then an evening in Kirklees

Two buildings, and what each demands overlaps very little. Morning belongs to somewhere run by a committee, whose layout, carpet and lighting rig were all decided years ago and stay decided whoever turns up with a camera. Evening belongs to somewhere hired, where a room can be dressed, dimmed and lit deliberately, and where the only real limits are budget and nerve. Treating the pair as one continuous assignment is how coverage thins out in the middle.

Families in this part of West Yorkshire have married in the same rooms for generations, and the morning carries an etiquette a visiting photographer either learns in advance or gets wrong in front of everybody. So we ask permission questions early, by phone, weeks ahead. Then comes the seam: an hour of clothes and cars and travel between addresses, where a surprising share of the real pictures live.

Floor height, long lens, one direction

Everything in that hall faces a single direction, and that fact alone fixes the camera positions. No lens may be raised above the platform, so a long focal length shot from floor height at the rear carries the ceremony, and wide frames get taken sparingly from one side. Carpet is the hidden trouble. Strong colour underfoot bounces upward into faces, and unless it is pulled out afterwards the entire morning turns green. Nobody notices this on the day; everybody notices it in the album.

Evening reverses the difficulty into too much freedom. A hired room hands you house lighting designed for conferences and dinners, and the burden shifts to us to supply what is absent without converting a family party into a studio. Langar deserves proper attention while all this is going on, because no other hour puts three generations of both families in one room doing the same task.

Kirklees Registration Service holds ceremonies in a Victorian-style room at Huddersfield Town Hall seating 30 guests plus the couple, and Cedar Court Hotel at Ainley Top offers licensed ceremonies for up to 350 guests with a courtyard garden for photographs. Greenhead Park, half a mile west of the town centre and restored in 2012, would give the couple a Victorian setting for portraits, and Castle Hill at Almondbury, topped by the Victoria Tower at 1,000 feet above sea level, is a hilltop alternative. We travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.

Can you work with our videographer at the gurdwara?+

Yes, and the earlier we two talk, the better. A single shared decision settles most of it: whether their panel burns continuously through the ceremony, because constant video light changes our exposure and any burst from us wrecks their footage. Settle it supplier to supplier.

Do your packages include a pre-wedding or engagement shoot?+

Yes, and take it. An hour under a lens beforehand shows us how you stand, who fidgets and which profile each of you favours, and it shows you that being photographed is duller than feared. Both lessons pay off on the morning.

Will we pay a travel charge for our wedding in Huddersfield?+

Huddersfield is about 153 miles north of our Northwood studio, and travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book. Send the gurdwara and reception addresses with start times, and the written figure is what you pay.

Do you photograph the choora ceremony?+

Yes, and from close in by preference. Bangles going on is a small, crowded piece of theatre in somebody's front room, usually badly lit with too many aunties. Go wide, be patient, and move nobody into a better position.

Are you able to work without flash near the Guru Granth Sahib?+

Yes. That room is worked entirely on available light, without exception and without anyone having to request it. Sensors cope, the lenses are quick, and the pictures are better for it: atmosphere is the actual subject and a flashgun deletes it.
