Kaushik Bathia, whose studio was established in 2001 and who is a Fellow of both the BIPP and the MPA, would travel up from Northwood for a Sikh wedding in Dewsbury. During the laavan and the milni we watch the family as much as the couple, letting a grandmother's tears or a cousin's laughter happen without interruption. On the wedding morning we would begin as the sangat gathers before the Guru Granth Sahib and stay through the kirtan, the sikhia, the four laavan and the ardas before following everyone into langar. Before the service begins we agree with the granthi where we may stand in the darbar hall, and we keep to it. If the reception is some distance from the gurdwara, perhaps at Healds Hall Hotel in Liversedge or Blenheim House in Batley, a second photographer can keep both covered. Add a pre-wedding shoot and an album, and we will happily travel to West Yorkshire and anywhere else in the UK.

Dewsbury station, about 9 miles south-west of Leeds on the main line to Huddersfield and Manchester, makes it easy for family to travel in for an anand karaj. Inside the gurdwara we work with heads covered and shoes off, while the Guru Granth Sahib is honoured as a living Guru through kirtan and the four laavan. The Grand on Huddersfield Road is one option for the meal.

Gurdwara light in West Yorkshire

You cannot dress a gurdwara. Its walls, its windows and its light are given, nothing gets rigged or gelled, and whatever West Yorkshire is doing outside that morning comes in unaltered. Positioning, not lighting, is therefore the whole of the morning's craft: which flank the daylight enters by, where floor seating stops, and which kneeling spots let us work without crossing in front of anybody. Get those three wrong and no bag of equipment will save the pictures.

Evening runs the other way round. A hired banqueting room can be dimmed, re-coloured and rearranged; for one night it does what you tell it. Banqueting rooms in Dewsbury include The Courts Banqueting Suite and The Grand. In between falls the stretch nobody schedules: a convoy across town, everybody changing clothes, and daylight draining away throughout. Plan that gap first. Nobody has pinned an hour to it, and everything downstream depends on it.

Working to the rhythm of the darbar hall

One axis of the darbar hall belongs outright to Guru Granth Sahib, and nothing we do encroaches on it. Everything is therefore made from the axes that remain. The sangat is seated at floor level, so every eyeline drops to roughly knee height and a standing photographer becomes conspicuous in a way no dark suit will fix. We work low, we time our movement to the gaps between shabads, and palla, small and quiet, gets its frame from a spot decided twenty minutes beforehand.

The four laavan are slow, and the couple circle at a pace set by the kirtan rather than by anyone's convenience. One approach lane exists, and it is shared with the family. Outside the building the pressure reverses: milni is fast, unchoreographed and full of embraces that happen once each, and the doli, when it comes, usually happens beside a car in flat, unhelpful light. No frame from the day gets looked at harder afterwards, so it is planned as carefully as the anand karaj.

We arrive early, dress dark, and spend the opening ten minutes learning which positions are open to us, rarely the ones holding the best angle. Through the anand karaj itself we barely move. The result is that when something matters the camera is already facing it, and nobody in the hall has been reminded we exist.

Where do you stand during the Anand Karaj?+

Kneeling, off to one flank, whichever one leaves the couple between us and the daylight rather than the reverse. We agree it with the granthi before anybody is seated, then stay put, shifting only when the kirtan covers the sound.

Do you photograph Sikh weddings outside the UK?+

Yes, we do travel for those. Dates abroad want more notice, since flights and equipment have to be arranged, and a conversation about the building and the granthi's expectations there would come long before anything is confirmed.

How many photographs will we receive from our Sikh wedding in Dewsbury?+
