If your Leeds gurdwara prefers no flash, we work with the hall's own light and hold steady exposures through the kirtan and each of the four laavan. A Punjabi wedding in Leeds can run from the mehndi and a jago with its lit pots, through the choora and kalire and the Anand Karaj, to a reception at a venue such as the Royal Armouries, whose combined event spaces can take weddings of up to 2,500 guests, and we would photograph all of it as one story. Every Punjabi family runs its day a little differently, so we ask for your running order early and plan each handover from the gurdwara to the reception before we arrive. You can add a pre-wedding shoot, perhaps at the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey on the north bank of the River Aire, a second camera for a busy darbar hall, and fine art albums for you and both sets of parents. If your morning starts early we would travel up to Leeds the day before; we travel from Northwood, and the travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.

Few cities move a wedding party as easily as Leeds, with one of the busiest stations outside London and the M1, M62 and M621 at the door. The anand karaj is held at the gurdwara: heads covered, shoes off, ardas, the four laavan around the Guru Granth Sahib and langar served to the sangat afterwards. Milni is the outdoor set piece. Gurdwara morning, Leeds reception evening

A gurdwara will not rearrange itself around photography. Guests sit down at ground level, and that drops the horizon of every honest frame to knee height and keeps it there, while the strip lighting overhead is whatever the building was fitted with. That fixes the job: choose your positions beforehand, take them quietly, and stay put. Ask the committee how close to the front a camera is welcome.

An evening room is the opposite proposition, because everything in it is still negotiable. Wall colour, how low the house lights can go, whether the top table faces a window at sunset: those are choices, and choices made late get made badly. Local venues include New Dock Hall, Temple Newsam, Royal Armouries and Oulton Hall.

The four laavan, and the journey between buildings

Between those two buildings lies the stretch nobody schedules. Cars are loaded, the doli empties the family out of one place and into another, and a good slice of the strongest daylight of the day gets spent on a pavement. That stretch is coverage to us, not dead time, because the honest reactions arrive there and not at the top table later. Tell us the departure time you actually expect, not the one on the printed schedule.

The laavan themselves move slowly, and slow is harder than fast. Four circuits at walking pace, the palla between them, and the same faces arriving at the same corner four times over. What changes each circuit is our height and which flank we shoot from, never the moment itself, so four events survive instead of one repeated four times. Kirtan runs underneath it all, which means shutter noise carries; a long lens at the darbar hall's rear wall buys more than proximity does.

An anand karaj asks a photographer to be almost invisible for an hour and then completely present for the six that follow. We plan the quiet part down to where our feet go, and let the langar hall and the evening run loose. Couples in Leeds get both from one person who has read the order of service.

For a reception sized for a Punjabi guest list, the Royal Armouries at Leeds Dock says its New Dock Hall holds up to 1,500 under a star-cloth ceiling, while Oulton Hall on Rothwell Lane hosts Sikh weddings of up to 220 and allows specialist outside caterers. Leeds City Council holds its register office ceremonies at Leeds Civic Hall on Calverley Street, where the West Room seats up to 38 and the Banquet Hall up to 90 on Saturdays, so a civil signing could sit a day or two either side of the anand karaj. How soon after the wedding will we see any photos?+

A first handful goes out a few days afterwards, chosen rather than dumped, giving relatives something to receive straight away. The graded set follows in weeks, and the extra fortnight is worth taking rather than handing over an unfinished edit.

Do you offer wedding albums for couples in Leeds?+

Yes. Albums are designed here from the finished edit, laid out in sequence so the day still reads in order, and no spread reaches the printer until you have approved it. Albums can also be ordered long after the wedding.

Can our parents order their own albums or prints?+

Yes. Parent copies are the commonest extra request we get, usually smaller than the main book and sometimes with a different selection, since both families rarely want the same pictures. Prints on their own are equally straightforward.

Do we get high-resolution files and the right to print them?+

You receive the full-resolution edited files with a personal licence covering print, so they can go to any lab you choose, at any size. We keep the raw originals and the retouching, but the pictures of your wedding are yours to use.

Are you insured to work at our gurdwara and venue in Leeds?+

Yes. Public liability is in place, the equipment is separately insured, and both renew annually. Whoever asks for the certificate gets it, so send us the contact who administers the building and the paperwork arrives well before the day.
