Walking the laavan around the Guru Granth Sahib
As the ragis sing the kirtan, we photograph the harmonium, the tabla and the stillness that settles over the congregation while the shabads fill the hall. The kirtan carries the whole morning, and we photograph the ragis as part of the story, their concentration and their voices woven through the frames of your ceremony. The moment the fourth laav is completed and the flower petals rain down, we are ready for it, photographing the shower, the smiles and the congregation calling out in joy.
The milni gifts, the garlands and the sagan exchanged between the families are photographed carefully, because these formalities are the story of two houses becoming one. At the sehra bandi we photograph the groom's sisters tying the sehra, the surma being applied and the family fussing over him before the baraat sets off. Chunni chadai is quiet compared with the rest of the week, the groom's mother placing the chunni over the bride among the aunts, and we work gently so the intimacy of it survives.

A maiyan is bright, messy and full of affection, and we hold on to every turmeric-stained hand and shared smile. Detail frames are collected in the first hour, the kara, the choora, the invitation, the shoes, so the album has room to breathe before the pace of the day takes over completely.
Midday sun outside a gurdwara is unforgiving, and we know where the shade is before the group photographs start, so nobody is squinting through the only picture with everybody in it.
