Kaushik Bathia, a Fellow of both the BIPP and the MPA, has photographed weddings since 2001 from his studio in Northwood, north west London. We let the tears during the laavan and the laughter at the milni happen without stepping in. We would cover every stage, from the mehndi and the jago at home to the sehra bandi, the kirtan and the four laavan, and then a reception at a venue such as The Guildhall, a Grade I listed building in the city centre that takes up to 120 guests. Stamina is underrated. A Sikh wedding can run from an early choora ceremony to a late reception, and since York lies roughly 165 miles from our studio, we travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.

Guests reaching York on the East Coast Main Line can reach the city without needing to drive at all, which makes an early anand karaj practical for families travelling up from London. The four laavan, the ardas and the sikhia are covered from the side, heads covered and shoes off, with nothing arranged for the camera. The Guildhall or The Grand would take the reception. Two buildings and a midday gap in York

A Sikh wedding day poses two lighting problems, and each is the reverse of the other. A darbar hall arrives already lit. Its fittings were chosen for a congregation, not for photography, and nothing about them will be changed on our account. The reception afterwards has no usable light of its own, so we supply every watt of it. Neither is a compromise if both are planned for.

That split usually means two buildings as well. Ceremonies here begin early, so the transfer lands around midday and leaves an awkward gap that few families plan for. Photographically it is the most valuable part of the schedule. Treat it as an event rather than a gap, and ask The Mansion House, The Grand, The Guildhall which of their rooms nobody else has booked at that hour.

Laavan, milni, langar and doli

The four laavan are paced by the ragis, not by anyone walking them, and every circuit returns the same two people to the same four places. We move between circuits and stay put during them. Floor level is where the sangat is, and where a camera therefore stays for hours, which makes a tilting screen earn its weight faster than a long lens does. Nothing fires from a flashgun, so shutter and aperture do all the negotiating with lighting nobody is going to touch.

Then there are the loud parts. A milni happens outdoors, unrehearsed, two families meeting and older men leaving the ground; it is wide-lens work with no second take. Langar reverses that again, rows of seated guests and steel plates, which reads best from underneath and near. Distance returns for the doli, because a family saying goodbye at a car door has earned the right not to have a lens in it.

Nobody inside a darbar hall should have to think about the photographer. Where we stand is worked out beforehand, with the granthi and with the family, long before the sangat gathers. Those spots get left only to lower a camera. Families remember the absence of interruption for longer than they remember any single frame taken during it.

York Museum Gardens. The ten-acre botanical Museum Gardens, planted in the 1830s around the Yorkshire Museum, run from the River Ouse to York Art Gallery, and York Venues asks wedding photographers to get permission first. ³
Rowntree Park on Terry Avenue beside the River Ouse was given to the city by Rowntree & Co. in 1921 as a memorial to Cocoa Works staff of the First World War, and has an ornamental lake and a Lych Gate. ⁴

Wedding photography in York, frequently asked questions

Do you and your team cover your heads inside the gurdwara?+

Yes. Our own scarves travel with us, so no relative is sent hunting for one on our behalf, and anyone assisting does the same. It is not a gesture towards the sangat; it is what entering that room asks of everybody in it.

What backup equipment do you bring on the day?+

Two bodies apiece, each recording onto duplicate cards, alongside spare batteries and doubles of whichever lenses the day depends on. A wedding cannot be run again next weekend, so the only tolerable failure is the sort nobody present ever notices.

How do you organise the family group photographs?+

Each side nominates somebody whose voice carries. We then work down a written list agreed weeks earlier, largest grouping first. Everybody in the opening frame stays for the next one, so people leave the set instead of joining it.

Do we get high-resolution files and the right to print them?+

Yes. Every frame we keep arrives at its full size, and printing it is yours to do at whatever scale you want, permanently. Selling them on, or handing them to a business for advertising, is what the licence does not stretch to.

Can you photograph our mehndi night?+

Yes, though it counts as its own job rather than an appendix to the wedding day. Mehndi runs late, in poor light, with no order of service to follow, so it gets covered loosely and lit gently. Ask for that evening early.
