Two buildings, two genuinely different jobs. The first is a congregation's, and no camera was considered when it was built, so its light is taken as found and its conventions are worked inside. The second is booked for one evening only, and every choice within it belongs to you. Most couples plan the evening carefully and expect the morning to sort itself out. Reverse that. It is the morning where asking questions early pays, and pays twice.
Where the morning happens is often not where the evening does, which drops a car journey into the middle of your schedule. That gap deserves designing rather than absorbing. Settle before the day whether portraits belong on the near side of the move or the far side, because it governs clothing, how long drivers wait and whether anybody eats. Guests coming by rail arrive at Hull Paragon Interchange, so when the move happens matters to them as well.

From milni to doli, a Hull wedding in order
Milni is handshakes and garlands in whatever space an entrance happens to give you, usually not enough of it, so we shoot it tight and accept a car park behind. Inside, the working position is low and seated, and the frame carries a ceiling above which nothing whatever may be lifted. That constraint is the whole brief for the morning. It removes the standing shot, the overhead and the wide from any balcony, and what it leaves is a long seam of sangat with faces ranged along that.
Four circuits, the palla joining them, and each pass looks identical unless our position changes, so it changes. Ardas brings a whole room upright at once, which alters the geometry and offers the only honest chance at seeing all of it. Langar afterwards is the warmest hour going and also the most frequently lost, because cameras get packed away too early. At the close the doli is brief, loud and final, and we would always stay for it.

Kirtan is long and low, then a dhol starts and the volume triples inside a second. Both ask the same things of us: no flash, no crossing anyone's sightline, no requests to do anything twice. We memorise the running sheet beforehand, so that when a room changes character our feet are already in the right spot.

Everybody stands, so we stop moving. The frame gets taken from wherever we already happen to be, at seated height or from the back, and we neither cross the hall nor lift anything above the line the room expects of us.
A booking fee secures it, and that amount comes off your balance later. Until the fee arrives, anybody else asking can take that date, and summer Saturdays disappear soonest, so if yours falls on one, treat the paperwork as urgent.
We give them room and we do not compete for it. A drummer needs space to swing in and a crowd to play at, so we shoot from behind the crowd on a longer lens instead of backing into the drum.
