For group and family portraits we work briskly and warmly, gathering people with a light touch so nobody stands around waiting and the celebration keeps its momentum. A raised position, a balcony or a step at the back, gives us one wide frame of the whole mandap with both families seated around it, and no close lens can replace that. Requests from your family are collected in advance, a particular aunt, a relative flying in, a photograph your grandmother wants, and we keep that short list in a pocket on the day.

As the sindoor is applied and the mangalsutra tied, we photograph the closeness of the moment, the expressions and the hands, treating it with the reverence it holds for your families. Aashirwad brings the elders forward one by one to touch your heads with rice, and we photograph each blessing rather than a sample, because those faces are the reason the album exists. Laja homa, when the offerings of puffed rice go into the fire, is easy to miss because it is quiet, so we stay tight on the hands and the flame as the grains fall.

Bhangra and dhol at the sangeet pull every generation onto the floor, and we photograph the older relatives dancing as deliberately as the choreographed sets, because those frames get looked at most. Kalire tied to the bangles get shaken over the heads of unmarried friends later, which makes a lovely, chaotic little sequence to photograph in among the calmer parts of the morning. Garba floors move as concentric circles turning in opposite directions, and knowing that lets us stand where the two rings pass one another, which is where the pictures have the most life.
