Kaushik Bathia is an award winning wedding photographer based in London, with over twenty five years and more than a thousand celebrations behind him, and travels to York and throughout North Yorkshire. In a room such as the Great Hall at Merchant Adventurers' Hall on Fossgate we would work in available light where possible, adding soft flash only when the evening grows too dark. In York that could mean a ceremony in the Bootham Suite at 56 Bootham, the register office room for up to 50 guests, a whole-house hire at York Mansion House, or a country house wedding at Middlethorpe Hall, and we would photograph any faith or fusion celebration with the same care. Our studio is in Northwood, around 165 miles south, so for a York wedding we travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book. Engagement shoots, a second photographer for busier days and beautiful fine art albums are all part of what we offer, and we travel throughout North Yorkshire and the rest of the UK for your wedding.
Inside the city walls the streets are narrow and the light arrives reflected rather than direct, which is why medieval lanes such as the Shambles photograph better in the middle of the day than at dawn. York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, dominates every wide frame and needs distance to be seen properly. Museum Gardens, botanical gardens beside the River Ouse, is the calmer alternative and holds a large family group without crowding. The Grand, The Guildhall and The Mansion House are all central, so ceremony and reception can often be walked between, which protects the schedule. York railway station is a major stop on the East Coast Main Line with the A64 linking the city onwards, bringing guests in from Clifton, Heworth and Bishopthorpe and from much further afield.

A civil ceremony is briefer and more fixed than every other event on the schedule. Licensing governs that room, and a registrar governs the licensing. Wording, music and the position a photographer may take are settled by other people, and the answer tends to reach you at the door instead of a fortnight out. We turn up having planned two positions and expect to be handed one. Registrars are not obstructive; they simply have a job that is not photography.
Once it is over, control returns to you. That hour between the register and the meal has not been claimed by anybody else, and it repays defending from the timetable. A walled city rewards an hour spent on foot, and Museum Gardens is the direction we would walk in. Ask The Grand, The Mansion House, The Guildhall where the family groups happen in bad weather, because that answer decides the hour, not the sky.

What separates one wedding from another is physical rather than stylistic. A tall room whose windows all face one way offers soft light and a direction to work in. Low ceilings and downlighters give you shadowed eyes and nothing worth bouncing into. Neither one beats the other; they simply demand opposite decisions, and those decisions get made before anyone walks through the door. Rooms come first with us, and taste a long way second.
Speeches are photographed from the listening faces, not from whoever is standing up. You get three minutes of first dance, under whichever colour the DJ picked, and none of it repeats. Groups go quickly when a couple has written the list and named a relative to do the shouting. Twenty minutes of calling names costs the evening an hour it cannot spare. Ask a venue early what its evening lighting really does; almost nobody thinks to.
