We work in available light wherever we can, adding a soft flash only when a dark room needs it, so the images stay true to how the evening looked. Inside the city walls the streets are narrow and the light arrives reflected rather than direct, which is why medieval lanes such as the Shambles photograph better in the middle of the day than at dawn. York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, dominates every wide frame and needs distance to be seen properly. Museum Gardens, botanical gardens beside the River Ouse, is the calmer alternative and holds a large family group without crowding. The Grand, The Guildhall and The Mansion House are all central, so ceremony and reception can often be walked between, which protects the schedule. York railway station is a major stop on the East Coast Main Line with the A64 linking the city onwards, bringing guests in from Clifton, Heworth and Bishopthorpe and from much further afield.
