No standard practice binds registrars, which catches couples out. A camera partway up the aisle suits some of them. Others place you at the rear and keep you there. Others raise nothing at all before the signing. Guesswork is useless here. The question goes to them months out, and two plans get carried, a permissive one and a restricted one, using whichever the room allows. Same-sex couples meet a different assumption, since the standard running order presumes one person walking in and one waiting, so the sequence is built from what you are actually doing.
Only the group photographs run on arithmetic. Every grouping costs about three minutes once somebody has been retrieved from the bar, which turns a list of twenty into an hour out of your reception. Keep the list short. Give it to someone in your family with a loud voice, not to us, because a stranger reading surnames aloud to two hundred people is slow, and it is your drinks hour being spent.
