Only two or three frames are made during the dua itself. Restraint here is the whole point, and a photographer working the moment hard would ruin what makes it worth keeping. Some families hold the nikah in a masjid, others in a hall, a home or a hotel suite. The setting changes our positions completely but never the principle of staying out of the ceremony. Sweet dates or mithai are often shared the moment the nikah is done, and we photograph the first taste passed between the newly married couple.
When the baraat reaches the gates, we photograph the dancing peaking, the family spilling out to receive it and the groom arriving to the loudest welcome of the day. The mehndi night is rich with colour and music, and we photograph the henna being drawn across the bride's hands, the songs and the teasing flowing around the artist as she works. Sehra bandi puts the groom at the centre of his brothers and uncles for a few minutes, and that tying of the sehra is one of the most photographable moments of the morning.

These getting-ready moments are never repeated and never staged, which is why we cover them as they happen rather than asking anyone to pose. Cars arrive, the convoy forms and someone is always late.
