The antarpat between you falls at a moment you will never see for yourselves, so we photograph from the side as the curtain drops and you look at one another for the first time. Hasta melap joins your hands beneath the cloth, and the frame we want is level with the hands rather than looking down on them, so we drop low for that part of the ritual.
The mehndi evening moves at its own gentle pace, and we photograph the henna, the music and the anticipation building as the family counts down to the ceremony. Mameru, when the bride's maternal uncle arrives with gifts and sarees, is one of the warmest of the Gujarati pre-wedding events, and we cover the presenting as well as the reactions. We photograph the sangeet performances from the wings and the crowd both, so the choreography, the nerves and the standing ovation are all there when the night is done.
