We stay. Days overrun, speeches begin late and the cake waits, and walking out mid-toast because a contract said so would be indefensible. Extra hours are agreed between us at the time, at a stated rate, invoiced later, so nobody negotiates in a full room.

How many hours of coverage do we need?+

Start from the first thing worth having and end at the last. For most couples that means arriving while hair is being finished and leaving once the floor fills, which is usually eight to ten hours. Cutting the morning saves money and loses the calmest pictures.

What happens if you are ill on the day?+

Missing a wedding is the one failure with no remedy afterwards, so the guard against it is a circle of photographers whose work bears comparison with ours and who take bookings at short notice. You would hear straight away, and would see their pictures first.

Would an engagement shoot help us relax?+

An hour spent finding out removes most of the discomfort, because discomfort under a lens comes largely from not knowing what anyone expects of you. It also teaches us in advance, rather than live, that one of you hates being handled in a photograph.

Can we spread the payments rather than pay everything at once?+

Yes. Booking takes a holding payment, after which the balance need not land in a single lump. Divide it across the months in between however you prefer, fixed in the contract, and the last part clears before the wedding instead of chasing you afterwards.
