Medway

A nikah in Gillingham, Chatham or Rochester

Gillingham is the largest town in Medway, part of one continuous conurbation with Chatham, Rochester, Strood and Rainham, and about 44 miles from our Northwood studio. A nikah here is often held at home, in a front room cleared of furniture, with elders seated and younger relatives filling the doorway. Kaushik takes one fixed position agreed with the imam beforehand and stays there, so the khutbah, the confirmation of the mahr and the offer and acceptance are recorded without anyone having to step around him.

If the nikah is at a mosque instead, tell us your mosque and any photography guidance it gives, and we plan around it. Questions worth asking the committee are whether cameras are welcome in the prayer hall, where a photographer may stand and whether the khutbah should be photographed at all. Shoes come off at the door and Kaushik dresses modestly. The signatures on the nikah nama, the hands raised for the dua and the faces of parents are the frames to plan for.

Medway has its own council, separate from the rest of Kent, and its register office sits at Northgate in Rochester, a short walk from the castle and cathedral. Local detail for the Medway side of the county is on our Muslim weddings in Gillingham and Rochester pages, with travel from Northwood to each address set out in writing before you book.

The legal side

Medway Council or Kent County Council: registering the marriage

In England a nikah on its own is not always registered as a civil marriage, so you may also want a civil ceremony. Kent splits this between two authorities. Addresses in Medway use Medway Register Office at Northgate, a ceremony-only venue with a Library Room for up to 50 guests and a Statutory Room for up to six, which is enough for the couple and two witnesses. Everywhere else, the offices belong to Kent County Council's A Kentish Ceremony service.

That county service lists seven register offices. In Maidstone, Oakwood House has a panelled Study for up to 15 as well as larger rooms. In Dartford, the Manor Gatehouse on Priory Road has a Manor Room for 35 and a walled garden offered for photographs. In Canterbury, Wellington House beside the River Stour has a Drawing Room for up to 25, and The Mansion House in Tunbridge Wells has rooms for 55, 30 and 16.

Book the civil date with the office directly, then tell us, so the legal ceremony can be photographed as a short, calm occasion on its own or folded into the wider package. A small register office ceremony often leaves time for unhurried portraits nearby, something a busy walima day rarely allows. The Kent wedding photography guide covers every office in more detail.

Mehndi and walima

Getting mehndi and walima guests to Dartford, Rochester and Ashford

Guests for a Kent walima often come from London and beyond, and the county's rail links shape the timetable. Dartford station is the busiest in Kent, where the North Kent, Bexleyheath and Dartford Loop lines meet, and it also has Thameslink services. Rochester station, opened on Corporation Street in 2015, has Southeastern high-speed trains to St Pancras, and so does Gravesend via Ebbsfleet. In the east, high-speed trains run from Ashford International to St Pancras in about 38 minutes.

That matters for photographs, because the couple's entrance, the stage and the family groups all depend on people being in the room. If many guests are arriving by train, we suggest building a little slack between the advertised start and the entrance. Dartford, the nearest Kent town to our studio at about 30 miles, is an easy place to start the week with a lively mehndi of dholki songs, henna trays and cousins taking turns to dance.

The walima may be the day after the nikah or weeks later in another Kent town, and each day has its own line in the quote. With up to about 250 guests at the county's larger venues, a short written list of family groups keeps the stage moving. A second photographer is an optional extra if the two families are getting ready in different towns on the same morning.

Prayer and privacy

Prayer breaks and private moments at a Kent walima

Prayer times move through the year, and in a Kent winter Maghrib can fall in the late afternoon, before an evening walima has even started. In summer it can land in the middle of the speeches. We look at the date with you and shape the running order so the entrance, the speeches and the cake sit either side of the break, rather than clashing with it.

When guests step away to pray, the camera goes down and Kaushik steps back until they return. During Quran recitation, the khutbah and the dua, he records from a distance and does not move through the room. Respectful coverage starts with a conversation: which parts of the day you want photographed closely, which from further away and which not at all.

Tell us too if any guests would rather not appear, and we keep them out of the frame and out of the gallery. Poses for the couple stay within what you are comfortable with. The rukhsati, when the bride leaves her family, often closes the evening, and in many families a copy of the Quran is held above her head as she walks to the car, so coverage is planned to run late enough to include it.

Portraits

Quiet portraits by the Medway, on the Great Lines and at the Westgate

A few minutes of couple portraits between the nikah and the walima need somewhere close and calm. In Rochester, Esplanade Gardens has a riverside walk with views of the castle, Rochester Bridge and the River Medway. In Chatham, Great Lines Heritage Park is open every day of the year, with walking routes and wildflower areas, and in Gillingham, Gillingham Park on Canterbury Street has a winter garden and a circular walk.

For couples in the east of the county, the Westgate in Canterbury, built around 1379 to 1380 across the River Stour, is the largest surviving city gate in England, and Dane John Gardens inside the city walls give trees and paths for a softer look. Wellington House register office is close by, so a small civil ceremony and a short portrait walk fit into one morning.

Canterbury is about 68 miles from Northwood, the longest journey in the county, and the travel is set out in your written quote. More on the east is on our Muslim weddings in Canterbury page, the wider picture for every tradition is on Asian weddings in Kent, and the national Muslim weddings guide explains how a nikah and walima are usually covered.
