The short answer

Who needs a portrait photographer in Kent?

People across Kent book portrait sessions for graduation, personal branding, a milestone birthday, an author photo or simply a good picture of themselves. Kaushik photographs at home, at the Northwood studio, or outdoors at Kent places such as Canterbury's Westgate, Rochester Castle or Knole Park near Sevenoaks. The nearest Kent towns are about 30 miles from Northwood, and travel is set out in your written quote before you book.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Kent, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

My two sisters and I ‘ the golden girls’ had a great, hilarious photo session. Kaushik is very professional and took some amazing photos especially when we were laughing so much trying to get up from the floor. Can’t wait to see ‘air brushed’ version. Well at 75 you need a little help. Definitely recommend Kashuik. He enjoyed our craziness!

Purpose first

Starting with what the Kent portrait is for

A portrait for a website about page needs different choices from one for a family wall or a dating profile. Before suggesting a setting, Kaushik asks what the photograph has to do, who will see it, and how you would like to come across: approachable, serious, creative, or simply yourself.

That answer decides the rest. A personal branding portrait for a Tunbridge Wells interior designer might use the Georgian colonnade of the Pantiles and a bright home studio. A Medway engineer's speaker photo might want something cleaner and more neutral. The aim is a picture you are happy to use, not just one you tolerate.

Our national portrait photography page explains the session in general. Here we look at what Kent itself can offer as a backdrop, and how the distance from Northwood is handled.

Graduates

Graduation portraits in Canterbury and beyond

Canterbury has three universities, including the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, with about 31,000 students between them, giving the city one of Britain's highest student-to-resident ratios. Graduation brings a short window when gowns are hired and families are in town, so a portrait session is best fixed well before the week itself.

The city gives plenty to work with. The Westgate, built across the River Stour around 1379 to 1380, is 60 feet tall and the largest surviving city gate in England. Dane John Gardens, inside the city walls, offer trees and paths for a softer look, and the cathedral, a place of pilgrimage since Becket's murder in 1170, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site with St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church.

Family groups can join the graduate for part of the session. If the ceremony day is too busy, a session a day or two later, with the gown still in hand, is calmer and usually gives better pictures. School leavers at long-established schools such as Sevenoaks School, founded in 1432, or Tonbridge School, founded in 1553, often want something similar at the end of sixth form.

Kent backdrops

Castles, keeps and old stone across the county

Kent has a remarkable spread of historic places that are open to the public and suit a portrait. Rochester Castle's Norman keep, built around 1127 of Kentish ragstone, rises 113 feet above the Medway, and the town also has Rochester Cathedral and the Esplanade riverside. Across the river from Chatham, Upnor Castle is an Elizabethan artillery fort begun in 1559.

In Maidstone, All Saints' Church dates from 1395 and stands beside the Archbishop's Palace, both Grade I listed along with the palace's tithe barn. Further east, Willesborough Windmill near Ashford is a Grade II* listed smock mill of 1869 on a red-brick base. In west Kent, Knole Park's 1,000 acres of deer park give an open, natural background a short walk from Sevenoaks.

We pick a setting that supports the person rather than dominating the frame. Stone and brick suit strong, formal portraits; parkland and gardens suit relaxed ones. Some sites have their own rules for photography, so we check those before the day.

Branding

Personal branding sessions for Kent businesses

A small business owner usually needs a set of branding portraits for their website, social media and press. That usually means a mix: a clean headshot, a few working shots at your desk, kitchen, salon or workshop, and one or two outdoor images in your own town that tell clients where you are based.

A florist in Sevenoaks, a therapist in Tonbridge or a builder in Gravesend each need a different feel. We plan a shot list together, so the session covers what you will actually use over the next year. Practicalities

Home, outdoors or the Northwood studio

Portraits of older relatives are often best at home, in a favourite chair with good window light and no travel for them. Kaushik brings lighting so that even a darker room works. For teenagers and young adults, outdoors in a town they know usually feels less formal than a studio.

The studio at 21 Joel Street in Northwood Hills is the option for clean backgrounds and full control over the light, and it is two minutes from Northwood Hills station. From most of Kent that is a longer trip, which is why a session near your home is often simpler. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, and the session price is given on request.

Planning

Planning around Kent

01

Start with the use

Tell us where the portrait will appear, from LinkedIn to a book jacket, and the setting, clothing and crop follow from that.

02

Graduation week fills fast

Canterbury's universities have about 31,000 students, so book a portrait for a day or two after the ceremony when the city is calmer.

03

Stone or green

Rochester Castle and the Westgate suit formal portraits, while Knole Park and Dane John Gardens suit softer, relaxed ones.

04

Home for older relatives

A grandparent's portrait in their own Kent home avoids travel and lets them settle in a chair they know.

05

Travel in the quote

The nearest Kent towns are around 30 miles from Northwood, and the travel for your address is written into your quote.

Portraits in Kent: questions answered

Ring or WhatsApp 07956 505383 for a Kent portrait price. The written quote covers the length of the session, any extra locations and the travel from Northwood to your part of Kent.

At home, at your workplace, at a public landmark such as Rochester Castle, Canterbury's Westgate or Knole Park, or at the Northwood studio. We suggest settings once we know what the portrait is for.

Yes. Graduation portraits can be taken in the city on or around the ceremony day, with family included if you like. Booking early helps, because graduation weeks are busy.

Around an hour suits most single-person sessions, including a change of top and a second setting nearby. Personal branding sessions with several looks and locations usually need longer.

Plain, well-fitting clothes in colours you feel good in. Avoid big logos and fine patterns. Bring a second option, and for branding portraits, whatever you would wear to work with clients.

Yes. Home portraits are calm and comfortable for older people. Kaushik brings his own lighting and works around their energy, taking breaks whenever needed.

For clean, simple backgrounds the studio is ideal, and it is two minutes from Northwood Hills station. For most people living in Kent, a session near home saves a long round trip.

Your photographer is Kaushik Bathia, a fellow of both the BIPP and the MPA with five European Kodak Gold Awards, working from the studio he opened in Northwood in 2001.
