The short answer

Can I book a graduation photographer in Kent?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs graduates in Kent on the ceremony day, at a later date at a Kent landmark such as Canterbury's Westgate or Tonbridge Castle, or at the Northwood studio. Canterbury's universities include the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University. Plan around your gown hire, which is usually returned the same day. Canterbury is about 68 miles from Northwood, and travel is set out in your written quote.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Kent, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

Kaushik has been absolutely fantastic!! I called him to book for a photoshoot session for my parents anniversary, last minute with just one day in advance. he was super responsive and was able to accommodate. He was also understanding when they were running late. Even more impressive is that he put my parents at ease and was able to get great shots, its their first photoshoot and it turned out great!

Canterbury

Graduating from the University of Kent or Canterbury Christ Church

Canterbury has three universities, including the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, with about 31,000 students between them. That gives the city one of the highest student-to-resident ratios in Britain, and on graduation days it is full of gowns, parents and grandparents all looking for the same few spots for a photograph.

A booked session takes the pressure off. Instead of queuing for a quick frame between the ceremony and lunch, you have a set time, a planned route and someone arranging the gown and hood properly before every picture. Choosing the Westgate or Dane John Gardens in advance means the family knows where to meet once the ceremony crowd spills into the streets.

Canterbury is about 68 miles from the Northwood studio, so travel to the city is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, with the session price given on request.

On the day or later

Ceremony day in the city, or a calmer date when the gown is still yours

Gown hire is usually returned on the day of the ceremony, so a portrait on that day has to fit around the ceremony time and the hire desk. That works well for a short session with the graduate and close family, built around one or two places near where you are.

If you own your gown, can keep it longer, or have relatives coming from further away who cannot all be there on the day, a separate date can be calmer. That might be a summer evening in a Kent park or town, or a session at the studio in Northwood.

Either way, the session covers the classic formal portrait of the graduate alone, then more relaxed frames, then the family groups. Our national graduation photos page explains the session in general.

City settings

The Westgate, Dane John Gardens and the cathedral precincts

The Westgate, built around 1379 to 1380 across the River Stour, is the largest surviving city gate in England at 60 feet tall, and it is Grade I listed. Its stone gives a strong, formal background for a gown portrait. Dane John Gardens, inside the city walls, were laid out as a civic park between 1790 and 1803 around the Dane John Mound and give trees and paths for a softer, greener set.

Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Any photography inside the cathedral grounds follows the cathedral's own rules, so we check those before planning frames there.

For family members coming down from London, Canterbury West has high-speed services to St Pancras, which can make a later-date session easier for grandparents who do not drive.

Elsewhere in Kent

Rochester's riverside, Tonbridge Castle and other Kent backdrops

Not every Kent graduate studied in Canterbury, and not every family wants a city portrait. In Rochester, the Esplanade Gardens give a riverside walk with views of Rochester Castle, Rochester Bridge and the River Medway. In Tonbridge, the castle grounds include the bailey lawn and the motte walkway.

In Maidstone, the 440 acres of Mote Park offer open grass and a large lake for a relaxed summer portrait with the family. Choosing somewhere close to home makes a later-date session easier on everyone, especially grandparents.

School leavers

Sixth-form and school leavers in Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and beyond

Leaving school is a milestone too. Kent has some very old schools: Sevenoaks School was founded in 1432 by William Sevenoke, and Tonbridge School was founded in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judde. Whatever the school, a leavers' portrait in uniform, in a prom outfit or simply as the person they have become is a picture families keep.

A leavers' session can be one person or a small group of friends, outdoors at a park or landmark near home, or at the studio. Book it around exams and results, when everyone has time to relax. For Sevenoaks, The Vine, with its 1850 pavilion and 1894 bandstand, and Knole Park's deer park are both a short walk from the town centre.

As with every Kent session, travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote before you book.

Planning

Planning around Kent

01

Plan around the gown

Gown hire is usually returned on the day, so fix the session time around the ceremony and the hire desk.

02

Canterbury West for family

Relatives coming from London can use the high-speed trains from St Pancras to Canterbury West for a later-date session in the city.

03

Westgate or Dane John

Choose stone for a formal portrait at Canterbury's Westgate, or trees and paths in Dane John Gardens for a softer look.

04

A later date in Kent

If you keep the gown, a summer evening at Tonbridge Castle or Mote Park is calmer than the ceremony day.

05

Leavers too

Sixth-form and school leavers can book a portrait on their own or with a small group of friends.
