The short answer

Where can I have graduation photos taken in Berkshire?

Graduation portraits can be taken at the Northwood studio, about 10 miles from Slough and 26 from Reading, or on location in Berkshire, for example by the Reading Abbey ruins, in Forbury Gardens or on the Long Walk at Windsor. Your own cap, gown and hood are welcome, and sessions cover formal and relaxed frames, solo and with family. Travel to a location is set out in your written quote, and prices are given on request.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Berkshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

Kaushik has been absolutely fantastic!! I called him to book for a photoshoot session for my parents anniversary, last minute with just one day in advance. he was super responsive and was able to accommodate. He was also understanding when they were running late. Even more impressive is that he put my parents at ease and was able to get great shots, its their first photoshoot and it turned out great!

I had an amazing experience with Kaushik Bathia. They were professional, friendly, and made me feel completely comfortable during the shoot. The photos came out beautifully — natural, vibrant, and exactly what I hoped for. Highly recommend

Choosing the day

Ceremony day, gown hire and a calmer second date

Hired gowns usually go back on the day of the ceremony, so a portrait in the full academic dress has to fit around that return. If your own gown is available for longer, or relatives are travelling into Berkshire from further away, a separate date after the ceremony can be calmer than squeezing photographs between the hall and the reception.

On a second date there is no crowd and no queue for the same spot, and the family can dress for the photographs rather than for a long day. Tell us your ceremony date and when the gown has to be returned, and the session is planned around both. A gown you own outright removes the deadline altogether.

Reading

Abbey ruins and the Maiwand Lion in the centre of Reading

Reading town centre has two settings within a short walk of each other. The ruins of Reading Abbey, where Henry I was buried in 1135, are a scheduled monument that reopened to the public in June 2018 after conservation work, and the old flint walls give a gown portrait a sense of age and weight.

Next door, Forbury Gardens is a Victorian town garden with the Maiwand Lion statue and a bandstand, holding a Green Flag Award every year since its restoration. A graduate on the bandstand steps with the family gathered below makes a natural group. Reading is about 26 miles from Northwood, and travel is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.

Windsor, Maidenhead, Wokingham

A castle avenue, Brunel's arch and a Gothic town hall

The Long Walk at Windsor gives the classic long view: a graduate in the centre of the tree-lined avenue with the castle behind. Windsor is about 12 miles from the studio, close enough for an early morning session before visitors fill the path. In Maidenhead, Guards Club Park looks across to Brunel's Sounding Arch and the Grade I listed road bridge of 1777.

Wokingham Town Hall, a Grade II* listed red-brick Gothic building opened in 1860, suits a more formal portrait in the Market Place. For a graduate in the sciences, Slough has an unusual link: Observatory House stands where the astronomer William Herschel lived and built his great 40-foot telescope.

The session

Solo frames first, then the family, by the river or the castle avenue

Each session starts with the graduate alone in the classic formal portrait, then moves to relaxed frames and the family groups: parents, grandparents and siblings who helped get you there. Posing and expression are coached throughout, and the gown and hood are arranged properly before every frame. Family groups come last, once the graduate is relaxed in front of the camera.

Outdoors in Berkshire, a breezy morning on the Long Walk or along the Thames at Maidenhead can lift a gown and hood, so a few clips in a pocket help, and the open avenue gives room for a long family line without strangers in the frame. If the wind or rain wins, the Northwood studio, about 19 miles from Bracknell, is the calm fallback, with controlled light and no crowd.

School leavers

Finishing school deserves a picture too. A leavers' portrait can be in a final school uniform, a prom outfit or everyday clothes, on your own or with close friends, and it works well at the studio or in a park near home, such as Lily Hill Park in Bracknell or Victoria Park in Newbury with its restored bandstand.

Sessions for leavers follow the same pattern as a graduation portrait, with a mix of formal and relaxed frames. Planning

Planning around Berkshire

01

Plan around the gown

A hired Berkshire graduation gown is normally handed back once the ceremony is over. Book the portrait around the return time, or choose a later date if your own gown stays with you.

02

Early on the Long Walk

Windsor is about 12 miles from the studio. An early start on the Long Walk gives the avenue and castle view before the path gets busy.

03

Abbey and gardens together

Reading Abbey ruins and Forbury Gardens sit side by side, so one Reading session can include flint walls, the Maiwand Lion and the bandstand.

04

Studio when it rains

The Northwood studio gives controlled light with no weather or crowds, which suits a graduate travelling in from Bracknell or Ascot on a wet day.
