We’re so glad we chose Kaushik as our photographer for maternity shoot —he was absolutely fantastic. On the day, he made us feel completely at ease, and the photos turned out superb. He was incredibly accommodating with all our requests and his attentiveness and personable nature were exactly what we hoped for in a photographer. Thank you, Kaushik!

Me and my heavily pregnant Fiancee visited here as a birthday gift from a friend of hers and had a LOVELY experience, Kaushik made us feel VERY welcomed and comfortable and we also had a good laugh. He was also very clear and precise with his instruction with regards to posing so we could get the best picture. Overall a very nice experience and would recommend.

I was nervous about how my 2 year old would react, but we had a great photo session! Kaushik had plenty of props to keep my son entertained, laughing, and happily posing.Afterward, he was incredibly patient as we went through every single photo to pick our favorites, even though we kept changing our minds. I highly recommend his service and will definitely be back once my second baby is born!

The first fortnight

Why newborn sessions happen in the first 5 to 14 days

In the first two weeks most babies sleep deeply and curl naturally into the folded, settled shapes that newborn photographs are known for. After about three weeks they are more alert, stretch out more and are harder to settle, so pictures become more awake and less curled. Both are lovely, but if you want the sleepy, posed set, the first fortnight is the window.

Because babies arrive when they choose, a session is booked loosely around your due date and fixed after the birth. Send a message by phone or WhatsApp once your baby arrives, and we agree a day that suits you, usually somewhere between day five and day ten. If your baby needs extra time in hospital, the session simply moves; nothing is lost.

Warmth and safety

Warmth, safety and a calm room at home

Newborns cannot hold their own temperature well, so the room is warmed to around 24 to 26 degrees before the session starts. Wraps and blankets are washed between sessions. Every pose is supported, and anything that looks precarious in a finished picture is a composite of two safely supported frames, with a parent's hand close by the whole time.

Feeding comes first. Sessions pause for every feed, change and cuddle, and a well-fed baby sleeps better for the next set of pictures. White noise helps, and so does a quiet house. Parents are welcome to sit nearby, rest or make tea; you do not need to do anything except feed and settle your baby when needed.

Siblings and parents

Big brothers, big sisters and parents in the frame

Older brothers and sisters are photographed at the start, while they are fresh and the baby is sleepy. Toddlers usually manage a few minutes holding or sitting beside the baby, with a parent just out of shot for safety, and the pictures of a two-year-old looking at a new sibling are often the ones families treasure most.

Parents should be in some pictures too. A few frames of your hands around the baby, the baby on your chest, or the two of you looking down at the cot take ten minutes and are worth it. Wear plain, soft clothes in neutral colours, and short sleeves work well for skin-to-skin shots.

Where in Berkshire

Home sessions from Slough to Newbury, and the studio as an option

Berkshire is split between six councils, from Slough and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in the east, through Bracknell Forest, Wokingham and Reading, to West Berkshire. Newborn sessions happen in all of them. Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead are between about 10 and 14 miles from Northwood, Ascot and Bracknell under 20, Wokingham and Sandhurst about 22 to 24, and Reading about 26.

Thatcham, with 25,464 residents at the 2021 census, and Newbury are nearer 40 miles away, and Kaushik travels to both for newborn sessions, so you do not need to make a long car journey in the first fortnight. Travel from Northwood to your home is quoted in writing with the session, and the session price is given on request by phone or WhatsApp.

If you live in the east of the county and would like a change of scene, the studio at 21 Joel Street, Northwood Hills, can be warmed and set up for a newborn, with time built in for feeds. For parents coming by train, Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line is two minutes' walk from the door.

Booking

Booking around your due date

Most parents book during the second or early third trimester. You give us the due date, we hold space around it, and the exact day is fixed after the birth. Twins and premature babies are welcome; tell us when you enquire, and we will plan timing and poses around your baby's needs and your midwife's advice.

Before the session we send a short guide: warm the room, have a feed ready to go when Kaushik arrives, and keep a few changes of clothes nearby for everyone. Sessions in Sandhurst, which spreads across Little Sandhurst, central Sandhurst, College Town and Owlsmoor, or in a new-town neighbourhood in Bracknell, run exactly the same way as those closer to the studio.

What comes next

Maternity before, cake smash after

You can pair a newborn session with a maternity photoshoot at 28 to 34 weeks, and the Berkshire maternity page covers parks and gardens across the county for that. At around their first birthday, a cake smash photoshoot makes a cheerful follow-on.

In between, an outdoor family session in a Berkshire park, such as Forbury Gardens in Reading or Victoria Park in Newbury, is a good way to mark the first summer. The national baby photography page has more examples, and the Berkshire photographer hub lists every service in the county.

Planning

Planning around Berkshire

01

Warm the room first

Aim for around 24 to 26 degrees before Kaushik arrives, so your baby stays sleepy and comfortable while unwrapped for the posed pictures.

02

Message after the birth

Once your baby arrives, send a message by phone or WhatsApp and we fix a day, usually between day five and day ten.

03

Siblings go first

Older children are photographed at the start, while they are fresh, and can then go back to playing while the baby is posed.

04

West Berkshire is covered

Families in Thatcham and Newbury, about 39 to 42 miles from the studio, get the same home session, with travel quoted in writing.

05

Plan the follow-ons

Maternity at 28 to 34 weeks and a cake smash around the first birthday complete the first year, and can be planned at the same time.
