The short answer

Can a newborn photographer come to our home in Bedfordshire?

Yes. Kaushik photographs newborns at home across Bedfordshire, from Luton and Dunstable, about 20 miles from the studio, to Ampthill, Biggleswade and Bedford, about 30 to 37 miles away. He brings wraps, props and backdrops, and the session is paced around feeds. Most sessions happen between 5 and 14 days after birth. Ask for the newborn price by phone, and the travel from Northwood to your Bedfordshire home is set out in writing first.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Bedfordshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

We had a baby and family photo shoot with Kaushik over the weekend. He was extremely professional and very good with our baby! He has all the tricks and toys to make our little one smile and laugh during the shoot (which kept us entertained too!) would highly recommend Kaushik for baby photo shoots! Many thanks for capturing such beautiful photos for us!

I was nervous about my newborn’s photoshoot but Kaushik made the experience very unforgettable. He knew how to handle my two week old baby with care. The pictures came out very beautiful and were forever grateful. He’s honestly the best. Very experienced, patient and professional. I’ll definitely use him again.

We have been to Kaushik’s studio over many years for photos for passport renewals. He is very professional and has always taken the best pictures. We booked a family session recently and he did an amazing job and put us at ease for the portrait shots. Beautiful and artistic photos. We are very pleased with them. We would highly recommend his services.

At home

Why a home session suits the first fortnight in Bedfordshire

In the first fortnight, a car journey to a studio 20 miles or more away is a lot to ask of new parents. A home session avoids it. Kaushik comes to you with wraps, simple props and a soft backdrop, and sets up in the room with the best window light, usually a living room or bedroom. You stay in your own clothes, the feeds happen in your own chair, and nobody has to pack a changing bag.

The session usually takes two to three hours, because the baby sets the pace. That includes time for feeds, changes and settling. We ask you to turn the heating up beforehand so the room is warm enough for your baby to be comfortable in a wrap or with skin showing.

Timing

The first 5 to 14 days

Newborns photographed between about 5 and 14 days old tend to sleep deeply and curl naturally, which allows the gentle, sleepy poses most parents want. After that they are more awake, though lovely photographs are still possible at three or four weeks with a different, more alert style.

Because Bedfordshire is a planned trip for Kaushik rather than a short hop, it helps to get in touch during pregnancy with your due date. We hold a window, and when the baby arrives you send a message and we fix the exact day. If your baby comes early or late, or you need longer to recover, the date moves.

Safety and warmth

How a newborn session is kept safe

Safety comes before any pose. Your baby is always supported, never balanced on a prop, and a parent stays close throughout. Poses that look as if a baby is resting on its hands are made by combining two supported frames, never by leaving the baby in that position. If your baby is unsettled, we stop and cuddle.

Warmth matters just as much. A newborn cannot regulate its temperature well, so the room needs to be warmer than you would usually keep it. Kaushik keeps his hands warm and wraps your baby between set-ups.

Siblings and family

Big brothers, sisters and the rest of the family

Older siblings are photographed with the baby near the start, while they are still fresh and interested. A toddler sitting on a sofa holding a baby with a parent just out of frame is a lovely, safe image. After that, a sibling can go and play while Kaushik carries on with the baby alone.

Parent and baby photographs are usually some of the most treasured from the session: skin-to-skin, a hand cradling a head, a parent kissing a forehead. Grandparents who live nearby can join for a family group at the end, along with a calm family pet.

The studio

Choosing the Northwood studio instead

If you live in the south of the county, around Luton, Dunstable and Houghton Regis, the studio is about 20 miles away by car. It is warm, quiet and set up with props and backdrops, on the Joel Street parade in Northwood Hills, two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line. Parents can relax on a sofa while the baby is photographed.

For families in Bedford, Biggleswade or around Woburn, the drive is longer, so a home session is usually the gentler option. Whichever you choose, the travel from Northwood or the studio arrangements are set out clearly before you confirm.

Follow-on sessions

Maternity before, cake smash after

You can start with a maternity shoot at 28 to 34 weeks, at home or in a Bedfordshire park, then book the newborn session to follow. Later, around a first birthday, a cake smash at the Northwood studio, where the backdrop and splash set are ready, is a fun bookend to the first year. A family session in a county park when the baby is sitting up, around six to nine months, is another natural milestone.

If you are thinking about more than one session, mention it when you first get in touch so we can plan the dates around your baby's growth.

Planning

Planning around Bedfordshire

01

Book before the birth

Send your due date during pregnancy. We hold a window, then fix the exact day once your baby arrives.

02

Warm the room

Turn the heating up an hour before Kaushik arrives. Newborns need a warmer room than adults find comfortable.

03

Feed just before

A feed shortly before the session helps your baby settle into a deep sleep for the first poses.

04

Clear a space by a window

An area about two metres square near your largest window is all the room needed.

  • Grove House Gardens: Grove House Gardens is a Green Flag Award-winning town-centre green space, once part of the 18th-century Grove House estate, with sculptures, spring and summer flowerbeds, a play area and a performance area. 2
  • The Village Green: The Village Green in Houghton Regis is just over seven acres of public open space with play areas, an outdoor gym and the Millennium Memorial Stone on its High Street side. 3
  • Rushmere management and dogs: Rushmere Country Park is managed by the Greensand Trust with Central Bedfordshire Council and welcomes dog walking, cycling and horse riding, with a Giant's Chair on its sculpture trail. 4
