Individual portraits, graduation photographs and personal branding sessions in Bedfordshire, set against the county's historic houses, avenues and churches, or in the Northwood studio.
The short answer
Bedfordshire has plenty of characterful portrait settings: the 1615 ruin of Houghton House near Ampthill, the lime-tree avenue of The Alameda, Woburn's Georgian streets, the riverside Embankment Gardens in Bedford and the Chiltern views from Dunstable Downs. Kaushik meets you there or at your home, or you can come to the Northwood studio. Prices are given on request, and travel is set out in your written quote.
Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Bedfordshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.
Kaushik has been absolutely fantastic!! I called him to book for a photoshoot session for my parents anniversary, last minute with just one day in advance. he was super responsive and was able to accommodate. He was also understanding when they were running late. Even more impressive is that he put my parents at ease and was able to get great shots, its their first photoshoot and it turned out great!
I did a fabulous photoshoot with Kaushik and thoroughly enjoyed it! I was very nervous, but he made me feel at ease! I will hopefully return for another one at a later date!
My daughter and her fiancé went to Kaushik for their photos, and we had a wonderful experience. He is incredibly friendly, patient, and helpful. He really took his time with them and captured beautiful, professional-quality photos. We highly recommend Kaushik Photography!
Who it is for
A portrait session is about one person, or sometimes two, and how they want to be seen. Graduates want a picture for the family wall that is warmer than the official gown photograph. People marking a fortieth, sixtieth or retirement want something more considered than a phone snapshot. Coaches, authors and small business owners need a set of images for a website, social media and press.
Each brief changes the plan. A graduation portrait might be relaxed and outdoors, a personal branding session might move between a desk, a doorway and a street, and a milestone portrait might be quiet and close in a familiar room at home.

Historic backdrops
Mid Bedfordshire is rich in old stone and brick. Houghton House, the English Heritage shell of a mansion built around 1615, has open arches and wide views, and dogs on leads are welcome there if you would like yours in the frame. Close by, The Alameda in Ampthill is a Grade II listed avenue of lime trees, and Katherine's Cross is a Gothic Revival monument put up in 1773 in Capability Brown's new landscape.
Churches give texture too. Flitwick's Grade I listed church of St Peter and St Paul has walls of ironstone and cobblestones with late 12th-century origins, and All Saints in Houghton Regis is a Grade I listed 14th-century church. We photograph from public ground and ask before using any church setting.
In Woburn, about 28 miles from the studio, the Georgian rebuilding after the fire of 1724 gives a whole street of matching doors and windows that work well behind a tailored outfit.
Open landscapes
For something more open, Dunstable Downs rises to about 243 metres, the highest ground in Bedfordshire, with the Vale of Aylesbury spread out below. Rushmere Country Park, just north of Leighton Buzzard, adds over 400 acres of woodland, heathland and meadows with a sculpture trail. In Woburn, the Abbey's landscape gardens and deer park were designed by Humphry Repton.
In Bedford, the riverside promenade made up of the Embankment Gardens, Russell Park and Mill Meadows suits a calm walking portrait, especially in the low light of an autumn afternoon. Kaushik plans the session around the sun's direction, so the light falls kindly on faces.

At home or the studio
Not every portrait needs a landmark. A favourite armchair, a workshop, a kitchen table or a garden bench says more about some people than any view. Kaushik brings portable lighting and works with your own windows, so a Bedfordshire home becomes the setting.
The Northwood studio suits clean, simple portraits on a plain background, and actors or musicians who need consistent headshot-style images. From Luton or Dunstable it is about 20 miles by road; from Bedford or Biggleswade it is a longer drive, so a local setting is usually simpler.
Planning
We start with a short call about what the photographs are for, where they will be used and how you would like to come across. From that we suggest one or two settings close to you, a time of day for good light and what to bring. Most sessions last about an hour.
Travel from Northwood to your chosen Bedfordshire location is quoted up front, and the session price is given on request by phone or WhatsApp. Once you have a date, we agree the meeting point and where to park.

Your old school field, a parent's garden or your workshop can say more than a famous view. Tell us what matters.
Some estates and gardens have set hours or entry charges. Check before the day, and we fix the time around them.
If you hire a gown, keep it for the portrait date as well, or book the session for the graduation weekend itself.

Yes. A park, a historic avenue or a riverside walk all suit a graduation portrait in a gown. Bring the hood and mortarboard, and family members can join for a few group frames at the end.
Yes. We plan a set of images for your website and social media: a headshot, working shots and a few relaxed portraits. These can be taken at your premises, around your town or at the studio.
Yes, as long as the location allows it. Houghton House welcomes dogs on leads, and several county parks are dog-friendly. A helper to hold the lead between frames makes things easier.
Most people do at first. Kaushik gives clear, simple direction, starts with easy poses and walks you through the session so you relax. Within ten minutes it usually feels natural.
Yes. Many portraits look strong in black and white, and you can have a mix of colour and monochrome versions of your favourite images.
Your photographer is Kaushik Bathia, a fellow of both the BIPP and the MPA with five European Kodak Gold Awards, working from the studio he opened in Northwood in 2001.
