The short answer

Where can I get graduation photos taken in Bedfordshire?

Kaushik Bathia takes graduation portraits for Bedfordshire graduates on location, at places such as the Alameda in Ampthill, Houghton House or the Bedford riverside, or at the Northwood studio, about 20 miles from Luton and 37 from Bedford. Sessions cover formal and relaxed frames, alone and with family, with the cap, gown and hood arranged properly. Prices are given on request by phone or WhatsApp, and any travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Bedfordshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

Kaushik did a great job in taking both formal and informal portrait photos. He is an enthusiastic professional photographer who made me feel at ease. The photographs were excellent and have been greatly admired.

Maria B., Google review, 2014

We were a little nervous as it was our first photo shoot but Kaushik was very friendly and quickly had our nerves calmed with his charming personality. A great all round experience and we have some fab professional photos that we are very happy with. Highly recommended, 5 Stars :)

Two options

Ceremony day or a quieter date back home in Bedfordshire

There are two ways to photograph a graduation. The first is on or around the ceremony day, while the hired gown is still in your hands. Gown hire is usually returned on the day of the ceremony, so the session has to fit around collecting it, the ceremony itself and handing it back.

The second is a separate date nearer home. If you own your gown, can keep the hire for longer, or have family who could not travel to the ceremony, a later session in Bedfordshire can be calmer. Grandparents in Dunstable or Biggleswade can join without a long trip, and there is no crowd of other graduates waiting for the same spot.

Whichever you choose, tell us the ceremony date and the gown arrangements when you get in touch, and we work out a time that fits.

Landmarks

Lime avenues, ruins and riverside paths for a gown portrait

Mid Bedfordshire has some of the most useful settings for a graduation picture. In Ampthill, the Alameda is a Grade II listed avenue of lime trees given to the town by Lord Holland, and a long avenue suits a portrait of the graduate walking towards the camera in full gown. Ampthill Great Park nearby, shaped by Capability Brown in 1771 and 1772, has Katherine's Cross, a Gothic Revival monument from 1773 near the site of the old castle.

Houghton House, the English Heritage shell of a mansion built around 1615, commands wide views and is reputedly the 'House Beautiful' of The Pilgrim's Progress. For a graduate with a literary bent there is a neat link to Bedford, where John Bunyan wrote that book during twelve years in Bedford Gaol and where a statue of him stands today.

In Bedford itself, the riverside promenade of the Embankment Gardens, Russell Park and Mill Meadows gives open water and trees behind the gown. Further south, Woburn's Georgian streets, rebuilt after the fire of 1724, and Dunstable Downs, the highest ground in the county at about 243 metres, offer very different backdrops. See our Bedfordshire portrait photography page for more locations.

Leavers

School and sixth-form leavers across the county

A graduation portrait is not only for university. Finishing school or sixth form is a milestone too, and a portrait session marks it properly, whether in the uniform for the last time, dressed for the leavers' evening, or simply as a record of who they are at seventeen or eighteen.

Leavers' portraits work in the same places as graduation portraits: a park near home in Luton or Leighton Buzzard, a landmark in Ampthill or Woburn, or the studio. Friends can join for a few group frames, and parents may want one picture together before the leaver heads off to university, work or an apprenticeship.

If your school or college runs its own leavers' event and you would like it covered, our Bedfordshire event photography page explains how event coverage works.

Hood colours, a windy escarpment and the family group

The session starts with the graduate alone, in the classic formal portrait, before moving on to relaxed frames and then the family groups. Posing and expression are guided throughout, and the gown and hood are arranged properly before every frame, so the colours of the hood sit flat and show clearly.

On Dunstable Downs, the highest ground in the county at about 243 metres, wind can lift a gown and hood, so the formal frames there are taken first while everything sits in place, and the walking shots along the escarpment follow. Houghton House welcomes dogs on leads, so the family dog can join a group in front of the 1615 ruin.

For family groups, think about who should be included: parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, and anyone who helped along the way. A framed portrait of the graduate with the people who supported them can be the picture that ends up on the wall.

Studio and travel

Coming to Northwood, or having Kaushik come to you

The Northwood studio is on the Joel Street parade in Northwood Hills, about 20 miles from Luton and Dunstable, 28 from Flitwick and 37 from Bedford. In the studio the light is controlled and there is no weather or crowd to work around, so there is time to get the gown and cap exactly right.

For a location session in Bedfordshire, Kaushik travels from Northwood to the place you choose, and the travel is quoted up front and shown on your written quote before you book. If a landmark has its own rules on photography, such as an English Heritage site or a National Trust area, it is worth checking them before the day. More on the studio session is on the graduation photos page.

Planning

Planning around Bedfordshire

01

Plan around the gown

A hired gown normally has to be returned the same day as the ceremony. If you can keep yours longer, a later date in Bedfordshire is calmer.

02

The Alameda in Ampthill

A listed avenue of lime trees that suits a walking portrait in full gown, close to Ampthill Great Park.

03

Dogs at Houghton House

Houghton House welcomes dogs on leads, so the family dog can join the graduate in front of the shell of the 1615 mansion.

04

Leavers welcome

School and sixth-form leavers can book the same session, in a park, at a landmark or at the studio.

05

Travel set out first

For a Bedfordshire location, travel from Northwood is shown on your written quote before you book.
