Plan around gown hire
Hired gowns usually go back on the ceremony day, so book portraits on the day or arrange a separate date while the gown is still with you.
Cap and gown portraits for Buckinghamshire graduates and school leavers: on the day, later in the summer at a county landmark, or at the Northwood studio with the family.
The short answer
Kaushik photographs graduates at the Northwood studio, about 6 miles from Gerrards Cross and 10 from Amersham, or on location at a Buckinghamshire landmark such as Old Amersham's Market Hall or Buckingham's Old Gaol. Bring your cap, gown and hood, and family are welcome to join. Gown hire is usually returned on the ceremony day, so plan around it. Prices are on request, and travel from Northwood is set out in writing before you book.
Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Buckinghamshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.
Kaushik was a great help and took some great photos for my partner and I. I would highly recommend for all your photography needs.
We were a little nervous as it was our first photo shoot but Kaushik was very friendly and quickly had our nerves calmed with his charming personality. A great all round experience and we have some fab professional photos that we are very happy with. Highly recommended, 5 Stars :)
Really pleased with my photos. Kaushik is very professional and took lots of picture for us to choose from. Our shoot was comfortable and not too long. I would highly recommend him.
Universities in and near the county
Buckinghamshire is home to the University of Buckingham, Britain's first private university, in the old county town about 37 miles from Northwood. On the county's south-eastern edge, Brunel University London received its royal charter in June 1966 and has its campus of brutalist buildings by Sheppard, Robson and Partners on Kingston Lane in Uxbridge, about 2 miles from Denham. Beaconsfield Studios is the base of the National Film and Television School, founded in 1971.
If you studied somewhere else entirely and came home to Bucks with a degree and a gown order, the portrait does not have to happen in the university town. It can be taken on the day near the ceremony, or later in Bucks, close to the family who will hang it on the wall.

Choosing a date
Hired gowns are usually handed back on the day of the ceremony, so plan the session around that. If you want portraits in the gown, either the shoot happens on the day, before or after the ceremony, or you arrange a separate date while you still have it. Some graduates buy their gown, which frees the date up completely.
A second date can be calmer than the ceremony itself, especially when family are travelling to Buckinghamshire from further away. There is no crowd, no queue for the best spot and time to get the hood sitting properly. Location sessions are booked like any come-to-you session, and travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book. The national graduation photos page covers the studio option.
Landmarks
Buckinghamshire has some formal backdrops that suit a gown. Amersham Market Hall on the High Street in Old Amersham, built in red brick with stone dressings for Sir William Drake of Shardeloes, was completed in 1682. The Gerrards Cross Memorial Building on East Common was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, unveiled in 1922, and is described as the only Lutyens war memorial with a functional purpose.
For University of Buckingham graduates, the town has its own landmarks: the Old Gaol on Market Hill, built in 1748 and a museum since 1993, and the 15th-century Chantry Chapel with its Norman doorway. Close to Buckingham, Stowe's Grade I listed landscape gardens cover more than 400 acres with the Corinthian Arch, Palladian Bridge and Gothic Temple. National Trust and private sites set their own rules for photography, so check before you choose one. See portrait photography in Buckinghamshire for more county settings.

School leavers
The end of school deserves a portrait too. Sixth-form leavers heading to university, an apprenticeship or a first job can have a session that marks the step, in the clothes they feel most like themselves in or the outfit for the leavers' event. It works on its own or with parents and grandparents, and it makes a good record to set beside the graduation picture three or four years later.
For an outdoor leavers' portrait, the Memorial Gardens in Old Amersham, which commemorate soldiers lost in both world wars, are a quiet setting, and Meades Water Gardens in Chesham sit on the former millstream of Amy Mill. Bourton Park in Buckingham runs beside the River Great Ouse. The town portrait pages for Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross suggest more.
The session
A graduation session starts with the graduate alone in the classic formal portrait, then moves to relaxed frames and the family groups. Posing is coached throughout, and the gown and hood are arranged before every frame. For a Buckingham graduate on location, the formal frame can be taken by the Old Gaol on Market Hill before the family groups move to Bourton Park beside the Great Ouse.
At the studio the light is controlled and there is no weather or crowd to fight. It is two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line, the same line that reaches Amersham and Chesham, and about 4 miles by road from Denham. You can read how portrait sessions work at the studio before you decide.

Buckingham is about 37 miles from Northwood. The Old Gaol, the Chantry Chapel and Bourton Park are all close to the town centre.
Brunel's Uxbridge campus is about 2 miles from Denham, so a Brunel graduate living in south Bucks has the studio and the campus both within a short drive.
National Trust and private landmarks such as Stowe set their own photography rules; check them before choosing a location for your graduation portrait.
Parents, grandparents and siblings can join for groups after the solo portraits, in the studio or on location in Bucks.
These Buckinghamshire landmarks and open spaces, each with its source, suit a graduation or school leaver portrait outdoors.
