The short answer

Can I book a graduation photographer in North London?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs graduation portraits around the ceremony, before the gown goes back, or on a separate date at a North London landmark such as Kenwood, Canonbury Tower or Sunny Hill Park in Hendon. The graduate is photographed alone and then with family, formally and informally. The drive from Northwood, 8 to 15 miles, appears in your written quote with travel itemised, and the price is given on request.

On the day

Gown, cap and the hours before the hire goes back

Gown hire is usually returned on the day of the ceremony, so the session has to fit between the end of the ceremony and the return time. Send us both times when you ask, and the shoot is planned to use every minute without a rush. The classic formal portrait comes first, then relaxed frames, then the family groups, with the gown and hood arranged properly before every frame.

For a Middlesex University ceremony, Hendon Park is two to three minutes' walk from Hendon Central, close enough for a quick set of frames before the gown goes back. Families arriving from further away may prefer a separate date, when the graduate is not juggling friends, gown queues and lunch bookings. The national graduation photos page explains the session in full.

Hendon

Middlesex University graduates and portraits around Hendon

Hendon is home to Middlesex University, which grew out of the Hendon Technical Institute, so Hendon is the natural place for a Middlesex graduate's portrait near campus. Hendon Park, a 12-hectare park opened in 1903 two to three minutes' walk from Hendon Central, has a Japanese maple named one of the Great Trees of London in 2008. Sunny Hill Park, 22 hectares on high ground at Church End, has extensive views north and west beside St Mary's churchyard.

For a civic setting, Hendon Town Hall on The Burroughs, opened in 1901 and Grade II listed, has a formal frontage that suits a gown. The RAF Museum on Grahame Park Way, free to enter, could appeal to an engineering or aviation graduate, subject to the museum's own rules on photography. Hendon is about 8.2 miles from Northwood, among the nearest parts of the area to us.

A later date

A separate session at Kenwood, Canonbury Tower or Charterhouse Square

A later date lets the portrait be about the achievement rather than the logistics, if your gown is available for longer or you own one. Kenwood, on the edge of Hampstead Heath, is a Robert Adam neoclassical house run by English Heritage in 112 acres of Humphry Repton parkland. Canonbury Tower in Islington, built between 1509 and 1532 and listed Grade II*, is the oldest building in the borough and was once home to Thomas Cromwell and Sir Francis Bacon.

In Clerkenwell, The Charterhouse, founded as a Carthusian monastery in 1371 and still an almshouse, faces Charterhouse Square, and St John's Gate, built in 1504 as the entrance to the priory of the Knights Hospitaller, is a short walk away. At the northern edge, the Hadley Highstone, an 18-foot obelisk of 1740, marks the site of the Battle of Barnet. Public parks with permit rules, such as the Heath and Alexandra Park, are booked once the permit is in place. See portraits in Islington.

School leavers

Sixth-form and school leavers, from Mill Hill to Southgate

Leaving school is a milestone too. A leavers' portrait before the prom or ball, in the suit or dress chosen for it, can be taken at home, in the garden or in a nearby park, and a frame of the leaver with siblings can be added before everyone heads out. Mill Hill School, founded in 1807, is an independent day and boarding school for 13 to 18 year olds with a Greco-Roman School House by Sir William Tite; portraits on school grounds need the school's agreement, so the public road outside is the usual fallback.

In Southgate, the Southgate Green conservation area keeps a group of Grade II listed Georgian buildings around the old village green, a calm spot for a leaver's picture with parents. Grovelands Park nearby has lawns and woodland for a relaxed set. Our portrait photography in North London page covers individual sittings at other times of year.

Family groups

Grandparents, siblings and the people who helped you get there

The session can end with the family: parents first, then grandparents, then siblings, and a framed portrait for the people who helped you get there is the classic gift. Formal and relaxed frames are both covered, and posing is coached throughout so nobody is left unsure where to stand.

Kaushik travels to you from Northwood; the travel is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, and the session price is given on request by phone or WhatsApp. If you would rather avoid weather and crowds altogether, the Northwood studio has controlled light and room for a family group. Prints, frames and albums can be ordered afterwards. For the area overview, see photographer in North London.
