The short answer

Where does a cake smash photoshoot for North London families take place?

At the Northwood studio, where the backdrop and props are ready for you. It is about 8 to 9 miles from Mill Hill and Finchley and about 13 to 15 from Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill and Enfield. Book it close to the first birthday, between about 11 and 13 months, once your baby sits up steadily, and bring a small, soft sponge cake with you. Allow one to two hours at the studio.

Kaushik has photographed my wife and me for the bump to baby photo shoot. We really enjoyed it. He knows how to make us smile and look happy and relaxed. We really appreciate his work and we look forward to meet him on our next appointment for the newborn photo shoot! Thank you again Kaushik!

I was nervous about my newborn’s photoshoot but Kaushik made the experience very unforgettable. He knew how to handle my two week old baby with care. The pictures came out very beautiful and were forever grateful. He’s honestly the best. Very experienced, patient and professional. I’ll definitely use him again.

We have been to Kaushik’s studio over many years for photos for passport renewals. He is very professional and has always taken the best pictures. We booked a family session recently and he did an amazing job and put us at ease for the portrait shots. Beautiful and artistic photos. We are very pleased with them. We would highly recommend his services.

The drive

From Mill Hill or from Edmonton: two very different trips to Joel Street

Every cake smash takes place at the Northwood studio at 21 Joel Street, Northwood Hills. For North London that is a trip of two halves. Mill Hill, Hendon and Barnet are about 8 to 9 miles away, Finchley and Golders Green about 9, and Crouch End and Hornsey about 12. Southgate is about 12.3 miles, Winchmore Hill about 13.6, Enfield about 14.6 and Edmonton about 15.1, so the Lea Valley side has close to twice the drive.

There is parking close to the studio, and Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line is two minutes' walk from the door if you would rather come by train. Whichever way you travel, carry the cake in a flat box in the footwell rather than on a lap, and leave a little slack in the timings so nobody arrives flustered.

Nap timing

Fitting the journey around your baby's nap

Book the start for your baby's brightest part of the day, which for most one-year-olds falls after a morning nap and a snack. The distance decides how the nap fits in. From Enfield or Edmonton, setting off as the usual nap begins means your baby sleeps through most of the drive and wakes close to Northwood. From Mill Hill or Barnet the trip may be too short for a full sleep, so let the nap happen at home and leave once they wake.

Tell us your baby's usual nap times when you book and a slot is suggested around them. Give yourself ten minutes on arrival for a feed, a nappy change and a look around the room before anything starts: a one-year-old who has settled is far more willing to dig in than one carried straight from the car seat.

At the studio

Clean frames, then the cake, at your baby's pace

Tidy portraits come first, so you have a neat first birthday picture for the grandparents, and parents or older siblings can join those frames while everyone is still clean. Then the cake goes down and the camera follows whatever your baby decides to do with it, from a wary poke to two-handed handfuls. Nothing is forced, a cuddle halfway through is fine, and the backdrop and props are ready at the studio. Allow one to two hours in all.

The cake is yours to bring. A bakery near home, on Muswell Hill Broadway, Mill Hill Broadway or the northern part of West End Lane, can make a small, soft one in one or two colours, which a small hand can break into far more easily than a tall, firm cake. Plan two outfits: a clean one for the portraits and a simple one for the mess. Bring spare clothes, wipes, a towel and a favourite toy.

Brothers and sisters

Older siblings and a party on the same weekend

A big brother or sister carrying the cake in, or helping with the first scoop, makes a lovely sequence. Decide beforehand whether they are allowed a handful or kept as cheerful spectators, because once the cake is down the youngest guest sets the pace.

If a first birthday party is happening the same weekend, ask about event photography for the party itself. The smash works best as a quiet session of its own, with just the household. Afterwards you choose favourites from a private online gallery, and prints, frames and albums can be ordered to sit beside the newborn pictures from a year earlier.

The follow-on

A family session back home: Mill Hill Park, Broomfield Park or Trent Country Park

The smash stays at the studio, but a family session around the birthday can come to you. Mill Hill Park on Daws Lane has play areas for toddlers to teens and a café, which suits a one-year-old who has just found their feet. Broomfield Park in Palmers Green has its old ponds and oaks, and at Trent Country Park the two main council car parks by the Cockfosters Road entrance are free.

That visit is booked separately as a family session in North London, and travel from Northwood for it is set out in writing before you book. Local pages cover Barnet, Southgate and Winchmore Hill. A cake smash closes a year that may have begun with a newborn session in North London, and the cake smash photoshoots page explains the session in full.

Planning

Planning around North London

01

Short trip or long trip

Mill Hill and Hendon are about 8 miles from the studio, Enfield and Edmonton nearer 15. Plan the longer run from the Lea Valley side as a car nap.

02

Nap at home from Barnet

From Barnet, about 8.6 miles away, the drive may be too short for a proper sleep, so let your baby nap at home and set off once they wake.

03

Cake in the footwell

A flat box in the footwell travels better than a cake on a lap, especially on the longer drive from Southgate or Winchmore Hill.

04

Mill Hill Park afterwards

A family session in Mill Hill Park, with its café and toddler play areas, makes a gentle follow-on near home, booked separately with its travel quoted.
