What families say

4.8 from 580+ Google reviews

We have known Kaushik Bathia for many years and he has photographed many weddings and events for the family. We also go to him for our family portraits and as the family grows, we keep returning to him not only because of his high quality work, but because of his great nature and light hearted approach that always makes the session so enjoyable. Highly recommended for all your photography needs!

Sachin K., Google review, 2021

Amazing experience with Kaushik photography. Pictures came out very high quality. The studio is also very nice and family friendly. The photographer there took his time to capture very memorable detail and that meant a lot to my family and I. I’ll definitely recommend Kaushik Bathia

Albert E., Google review, 2025

We had a family shoot at the studio, Kaushik took some wonderful photos. He was excellent with the kids and was very good at making them smile naturally, the end results were brilliant. We purchased a canvas and 2 further large framed photos. All completed on time and to perfection. Very pleased.

Card timing

Working back from the posting date for cards from Finchley to Enfield

A card picture has a deadline, so tell us your posting date when you first ask and the session is booked in time for the cards. If the setting you want needs a permit, as Hampstead Heath, Alexandra Park and Primrose Hill do, start earlier still, because the permit has to be in place before the date is fixed. The Christmas photoshoot page covers the general timing.

Light is the other constraint. North London's winter afternoons are short, so an outdoor session in late November or December is booked in the middle of the day, and a session at home is planned around the brightest window in the house. High-resolution files are supplied ready for any card printer, and prints and frames can be ordered as presents; order those early too.

At home

By your own tree: Christmas at home in Highgate, Muswell Hill or Winchmore Hill

The tree you decorated together is the most personal backdrop there is. A home session in Muswell Hill, Highgate or Winchmore Hill uses the room the tree stands in, with the family on the sofa or floor near it and the tree lights glowing softly behind. Children can be photographed hanging a last decoration or opening an early present, which gives natural expressions rather than a lined-up row.

Grandparents, cousins and the family dog are welcome; tell us who is coming so the room and posing suit everyone. In the bay-windowed front rooms of Muswell Hill and Winchmore Hill, two or three plain colours shared between you look calmer against the tree than identical jumpers. More family sessions are on family photography in Muswell Hill.

Winter walks

Frosty mornings in Trent Country Park, Grovelands and Broomfield Park

Outdoors, North London's big parks hold their shape in winter. Trent Country Park in Cockfosters has an avenue of lime trees and ornamental lakes across 320 hectares, the two main council car parks by the Cockfosters Road entrance are free, and the park is about ten minutes' walk from Cockfosters station. Grovelands Park between Southgate and Winchmore Hill has a seven-acre former boating lake and woodland, and Broomfield Park in Palmers Green has 18th-century ponds, a conservatory and magnificent oaks.

Evergreens help a December picture look seasonal without props. Swan Lane Open Space in Whetstone has giant redwoods and a Cedar of Lebanon, Friary Park in Friern Barnet has three redwood trees, and the Forty Hall Estate in Enfield has one of the oldest Cedar of Lebanon trees in England. Hampstead Heath needs a City of London licence for photography, offered on weekdays only, and Alexandra Park and Primrose Hill also need a permit. See family photography in Cockfosters.

Mini-session dates

How Christmas mini-session dates are released

Short Christmas mini sessions run at the Northwood studio, around 20 to 30 minutes each, guided and relaxed, with a small set of edited images to choose from. Dates are released for the season rather than fixed in advance, so ask by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383 to hear what is available and the current price.

Diwali and Eid sittings follow the same short format in the studio, and a Diwali session can also be at home among your own diyas and rangoli; see Diwali photoshoots and Eid photoshoots. An indoor sitting at the studio is unaffected by rain or the early dark. A Christmas session at home or in a North London park is booked separately from the studio minis, and its travel from Northwood is quoted before you book.

Planning the group

Big families, small children and the dog

December brings relatives together who rarely share a room the rest of the year, which makes it the natural time for a multi-generation picture. Start with the whole group while everyone is fresh, then split into households, then the grandparents with the grandchildren. Little ones set the pace, and the session stops before anyone is tired.

For a group too big for one living room, a park works better: Grovelands, Trent Country Park and Broomfield Park all have open lawns where twenty people can stand in two rows. Tell us the number of people, the ages of the youngest and any mobility needs, and the location and timing are planned around them. Family sessions at other times of year are on family photography in North London.

Planning

Planning around North London

01

Send your posting date

Give us the date your cards need to go out, and the session is booked in time for the cards, with any park permit arranged first.

02

Trent Park's free car parks

The two main council car parks by Trent Country Park's Cockfosters Road entrance are free, handy when grandparents are joining a winter walk.

03

Weekdays on the Heath

Hampstead Heath's photography licence is offered Monday to Friday only, so a Heath Christmas portrait needs a weekday, ideally around midday in December.

04

Evergreens in Whetstone

Giant redwoods and a Cedar of Lebanon at Swan Lane Open Space give a December family portrait some deep green without a single prop.

Winter settings in North London

  • Waterlow Park: Waterlow Park is a 26-acre (11 ha) hillside park in the London Borough of Camden, given to the public in 1889 by Sir Sydney Waterlow as 'a garden for the gardenless', with three spring-fed ponds and views across the City. 1
  • Trent Country Park: Trent Country Park is a 320-hectare country park run by the London Borough of Enfield, in the Metropolitan Green Belt and listed Grade II on the Register of Parks and Gardens, with an avenue of lime trees, ornamental lakes and the medieval Camlet Moat. 2
  • Totteridge Fields: Totteridge Fields, reached from Hendon Wood Lane, is a nature reserve of more than thirty hedged fields along the valley of the Dollis Brook north of Totteridge Common. 3
  • Dog walking on the Heath: The Heath's Dog Walking Code of Conduct says a dog off the lead must respond when called and its mess must be bagged, and professional dog walkers need a City of London licence to operate on the Heath. 4
  • Highgate Wood: Highgate Wood on Muswell Hill Road (N10 3JN) is 70 acres of ancient woodland run by the City of London as a charity, with a café, a large playground and a sports field; cycling is not allowed. 5

Good to know

Christmas photoshoots in North London: questions answered
