I booked the family portrait for my family and it was a wonderful experience. Kaushik is such a great photographer, able to coax a smile from any reluctant person. Making the decision of which pictures to chose is particularly difficult as they are all good.

The studio in December

Christmas mini sessions on the Joel Street parade

The simplest way to get a Christmas photograph is a mini session at the studio: a guided family sitting of around 20 to 30 minutes that gives you a small set of edited images, enough for a card, a framed present and a few to share. The studio is unaffected by rain and short winter afternoons, which matters when a card has a deadline. Families in Northwood, Northwood Hills and Moor Park can walk there, and Pinner, Eastcote and Ruislip are under two miles away.

Mini session dates are released for each season rather than fixed in advance, so the way to find them is to ask by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383 and tell us how many people are coming. Grandparents, cousins and the family dog are welcome if we know beforehand. More detail is on the Christmas photoshoot page, and the closest local pages are Christmas in Northwood and Christmas in Harrow.

Card deadlines

Cards, calendars and the studio diary in the autumn

If a picture is going on your cards, ask about dates early in the autumn so the session is booked in time for the cards rather than squeezed into December. Families in Northwood, Northwood Hills and Moor Park can call in at the studio on Joel Street during opening hours to ask in person; from Harrow, Ruislip or Stanmore it is quicker by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383. If you have a fixed posting date, perhaps for relatives abroad, say so when you book and we will work back from it.

December dates are in demand, since the card deadline is the same for everyone. If the weeks before Christmas are already full, a session in the second half of November still gives a picture for a card, a calendar or a present. Diwali and Eid sittings follow the same short format in the studio, and a Diwali portrait can also be taken at home among your own diyas and rangoli; see Diwali photoshoots and Eid photoshoots for how those run.

At home with the tree

A family photograph by your own tree, from a Metro-land semi to a Wembley flat

Some families want the Christmas photograph in their own living room, with their own tree and the decorations the children made. For this one Kaushik comes to you, and the session works around the room as it is rather than rearranging it. North West London's homes give very different settings: Ruislip Manor's 'Manor Homes' were built between 1933 and 1939 on land bought from King's College, Cambridge, and about 1,700 'Tudorbethan' semis went up on the Sudbury Court Estate between 1928 and 1934.

Daylight is short in December, so an at-home session is best in the late morning or early afternoon, with the tree lights switched on for warmth. In a 1930s semi, putting the tree near the bay window gives the family group the best of the December light as well. Pinner is 1.5 miles from the studio and Wembley about six, and travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.

Winter walks

Frosty mornings in Ruislip Woods, Pinner Memorial Park and Canons Park

An outdoor Christmas session in coats and scarves suits families with children who will not sit still. Pinner Memorial Park has a pond with ducks and geese, woodland and an ornamental Peace Garden, and is home to the Heath Robinson Museum. Canons Park, a Grade II registered historic park, has ponds and the King George V Memorial Garden, a walled garden with a central square pool and a raised terrace. Ruislip Woods offers the largest block of ancient woodland in Greater London.

Hillingdon Council requires permission for professional photos in its parks and green spaces, even for a personal family shoot, so if you want Ruislip Woods or Manor Farm, allow time to apply through the Hillingdon Film Office before your date. Winter light is low and soft from mid-morning to early afternoon, which is when outdoor Christmas sessions are best scheduled.

Lights on the parade

Festive lights, local high streets and a picture to remember the season

Some of the area's high streets dress up for Christmas. In Hatch End, local traders have funded festive street lighting and switch-on events on the Broadway, and a family portrait taken nearby on a winter afternoon can include a little of that glow. Hatch End is about 1.7 miles from the studio.

Whatever the setting, the session is guided from start to finish: who stands where, what to do with your hands, and how to keep a toddler interested for one more frame. 02

Ask in early autumn

The tree at home

A family session in your living room puts your own tree and the decorations the children made in the picture.

04

Hillingdon parks need a permit

Outdoor sessions in Ruislip Woods or at Manor Farm need Hillingdon Film Office permission first, so plan an outdoor Christmas session early.

05

Grandparents and the dog

Tell us who is coming when you book, so the space and the posing suit three generations and any four-legged guests.
