Excellent photography services before and during our wedding. Really enjoyed him being our photographer and he did a great job with the pictures. Working with him on the albums post wedding has been fantastic, he takes time to understand our ideas and portrays them in his work. Brilliant personality and very professional.

Register offices

The Pavilion, Hillingdon Civic Centre and Brent's Ceremony Suite compared

Harrow's register office ceremonies take place at The Pavilion on Perceval Square, off College Road, a bright room seating up to 50 that opens onto a courtyard for photographs. It is a one-minute walk from Harrow-on-the-Hill station, which makes it easy for guests arriving by Metropolitan line. That courtyard is where the first group photographs usually happen, so it is worth agreeing the order of groups before the day.

Hillingdon's ceremonies are held in the 1970s Civic Centre on Uxbridge High Street, in the Nova Room for up to 20 people or the Astra Suite for up to 80. The nearest public car park is in The Chimes shopping centre opposite. Brent's Ceremony Suite is on the ground floor of Brent Civic Centre at 32 Engineers Way, Wembley, with floor-to-ceiling daylight, a flower arch and flower wall, and room for up to 100 guests; three free parking spaces are kept for the couple.

Daylight matters in a small room. The Brent suite's floor-to-ceiling daylight helps a great deal, while the Nova Room's size means Kaushik plans his position before the registrar begins so he never has to move during the vows. In the larger Astra Suite or the Brent suite there is room to change angle between the readings and the signing without anyone noticing.

Barns and gardens

The Great Barn at Manor Farm, Brent's Ceremony Gardens and Hendon Town Hall

Not every council ceremony is in an office. Hillingdon Council lists the Great Barn at Manor Farm, Ruislip, among its own ceremony rooms, for up to 150 guests at the ceremony and 200 at the reception. The barn is 13th century and listed Grade II*, and it sits within a 22-acre heritage site that also has a Tudor farmhouse, a duck pond and the remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, so the portraits can happen a few steps from the ceremony.

Brent Civic Centre also has licensed outdoor Ceremony Gardens for up to 100, laid out in three landscaped areas with pergolas, a canopy, fairy lights and heaters for use all year. On the Barnet side, ceremonies moved in February 2017 from Burnt Oak to Hendon Town Hall, a Grade II listed building opened in 1901, where the Heritage Room seats up to 45 and the Council Chamber up to 100.

Portraits

Portrait stops from St Mary's churchyard to Ruislip Lido

Couples marrying at The Pavilion are a short drive from Harrow Hill, where the churchyard of St Mary's looks across London to Canary Wharf, the BT Tower and Wembley Stadium. Headstone Manor Park in North Harrow, with its moat and more than 50 acres of restored grounds, is another option a few minutes from Harrow town centre.

In Hillingdon the obvious spots are Ruislip Lido, with its sandy beach and woodland edge, the walled garden at Eastcote House Gardens and Swakeleys Park in Ickenham, which has a lake and the River Pinn. Hillingdon Council requires permission for professional wedding photographs in all of its green spaces, so allow time to apply through the Hillingdon Film Office when you fix the date. In Brent, Gladstone Park sits on a hill with views across London, meadows, a walled garden and a duck pond.

On the move

A wedding day that crosses Harrow, Brent and Hillingdon

A local wedding can easily use more than one borough: preparations in Pinner, a ceremony at Brent Civic Centre and a reception back towards Uxbridge, for example. Distances are short, with Harrow 3.5 miles from the studio, Uxbridge 4.9 and Wembley 6.0, but traffic on the A5 and around Wembley Stadium on match and concert days can stretch them, so we time the gaps between venues with a margin.

Brent Civic Centre is close to Wembley Park, Wembley Central and Wembley Stadium stations, and The Pavilion is a minute from Harrow-on-the-Hill, which helps when older relatives travel by train. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, and the timeline Kaushik builds with you shows where he will be at each point of the day.

Seasons

Bluebells in Gutteridge Wood, winter in a heated garden

Spring brings bluebells to Gutteridge Wood and Meadows in North Hillingdon, part of Yeading Woods Local Nature Reserve, and the oak and hornbeam of Ruislip Woods, the largest block of ancient semi-natural woodland in Greater London, come into leaf soon after. Summer suits the open lawns of Headstone Manor Park and the beach at Ruislip Lido for longer portrait sessions.

Winter weddings are shorter on daylight, so portraits are best planned early in the afternoon, ideally before the ceremony if you are happy to see each other first. Brent's Ceremony Gardens have heaters and lighting for year-round use, and indoor rooms such as the Astra Suite or Hendon Town Hall's Council Chamber keep a December ceremony comfortable.

Planning

Planning around North West London

01

Book the courtyard moment

The Pavilion in Harrow opens onto a courtyard for photographs. Agree your group list in advance so the family photographs in the courtyard are done quickly.

02

Pick the right Hillingdon room

The Nova Room holds 20 and the Astra Suite 80 at Uxbridge Civic Centre; the Great Barn at Manor Farm takes up to 150 for the ceremony and 200 for the reception.

03

Ask for Film Office permission

Wedding portraits in Hillingdon parks, including Ruislip Lido and Eastcote House Gardens, need council permission, which you apply for through the Hillingdon Film Office. Apply once your date and location are fixed.

04

Check Wembley event days

Brent Civic Centre sits close to Wembley Stadium. Check the stadium calendar before fixing your date, because event-day crowds affect parking, trains and the drive to a reception.

Weddings in North West London: questions answered

Wedding photography starts from £750. Packages are built around your day, so the final figure depends on the hours, the number of events and any extras such as a second photographer, a pre-wedding shoot or an album. Any travel from Northwood to your ceremony room is itemised in the written quote.

The Pavilion at Perceval Square seats up to 50 people. If your list is longer, Brent's Ceremony Suite and Ceremony Gardens take up to 100, Hillingdon's Astra Suite takes 80, and the Great Barn at Manor Farm holds up to 150 for the ceremony and 200 for the reception.

Brent Civic Centre has licensed outdoor Ceremony Gardens for up to 100 guests, in three landscaped areas with pergolas, a canopy and heaters, so an outdoor civil ceremony is possible all year. Kaushik plans the angles around the canopy and the time of day.

Hillingdon Register Office at the Civic Centre, High Street, Uxbridge UB8 1UW handles notices of marriage and civil partnership for the borough, including Ruislip. Contact the office directly for appointments and current requirements, and give notice in good time, as the legal notice period has to pass before the ceremony can go ahead.

Yes. Barnet's register office ceremonies are held at Hendon Town Hall, a Grade II listed building where the Heritage Room seats up to 45 and the Council Chamber up to 100. It serves couples from Edgware, Burnt Oak and Colindale.

You can, with permission. Hillingdon Council requires it for professional wedding photographs in its green spaces, including Ruislip Lido and Manor Farm, and you apply through the Hillingdon Film Office well before the day. Ruislip is 1.8 miles from the studio, so it fits easily into a day that starts in Uxbridge.

It can be. The Ceremony Suite has floor-to-ceiling daylight and the outdoor gardens have heaters and lighting for use all year. Plan portraits for the early afternoon, as the light goes quickly in December and January.
