Being clear about distance

Photographing a wedding 114 to 125 miles from Northwood

We would rather be plain about this at the start. Shropshire is well over 100 miles from our studio. For a day that runs from morning preparations through the evening, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote. That is not a reason to rule us out; it is simply part of the plan.

In a Shropshire quote, the package, the travel from Northwood and any hotel night each have their own line, set out in writing before you book. If your wedding runs over two days, for example a civil ceremony on Friday and a celebration on Saturday, we plan the stay to cover both, which often costs less than two separate trips.

Two centres

Telford in the east and Shrewsbury in the loop of the Severn

Shropshire's two main centres feel very different. Telford, about 114 miles from Northwood, was designated a new town in 1963 as Dawley New Town and renamed in 1968 after the engineer Thomas Telford. Its southern edge drops into the wooded Ironbridge Gorge, where Abraham Darby first smelted iron with coke at Coalbrookdale in 1709.

Shrewsbury, the county town, is about 125 miles away and sits inside a meander of the River Severn. It has more than 660 listed buildings and was Charles Darwin's birthplace. A wedding that moves between the two, perhaps a ceremony in Shrewsbury and an evening in the Gorge, is straightforward if the drive is built into the timeline.

Register offices

Giving notice and marrying at Wellington or Frankwell Quay

Shropshire has two councils for registration. On the Telford side, Telford and Wrekin Register Office is at Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre on Tan Bank, where civil marriages can take place in the Register Office, The Atrium or The Wrekin Suite. The choice of room gives you some flexibility on numbers and setting.

In Shrewsbury, Shropshire Council's registration point is at The Guildhall on Frankwell Quay, and the Guildhall is also on the council's list of approved ceremony venues. Check with the relevant council about notice periods and photography during the ceremony, and we will work to their guidance on the day.

World Heritage portraits

The Iron Bridge and the Gorge as a wedding backdrop

The Iron Bridge, completed in 1779 and opened to traffic on New Year's Day 1781, was the world's first iron bridge, a single cast-iron span of 30 metres across the Severn. The wooded valley around it is now the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, inscribed by UNESCO in 1986. Few places give such a recognisable setting for couple portraits.

Ironbridge also has riverside hotels that host wedding breakfasts, and Telford and Wrekin's approved list includes heritage settings near the Gorge. If the Gorge is part of your day, we plan the portrait stop for the softest light and allow time for walking on the riverside paths.

Shrewsbury

The Quarry, Laura's Tower and Shrewsbury Abbey

The Quarry is Shrewsbury's 29-acre riverside park beside the Severn, laid out in 1719. Its sunken garden, the Dingle, was once a stone quarry and now has a bust of the gardener Percy Thrower. If you plan portraits there in August, check the date of the Shrewsbury Flower Show, which takes over the Quarry for two days each mid-August.

Laura's Tower in the grounds of Shrewsbury Castle looks over the town and the surrounding countryside, and the castle itself is a Grade I listed red sandstone building begun around 1067. Shrewsbury Abbey, founded in 1083, keeps its nave as a Grade I listed parish church. All three are within reach of the Guildhall for a short portrait stop.

Venues and next steps

Manor houses, castles and gardens on Shropshire's approved lists

Shropshire's approved venues include Georgian manor house hotels with ceremony gardens, Tudor manors, castle hotels, golf resorts, museums and sports grounds. Garden venues reward an outdoor ceremony in summer, while the historic houses and the castle give indoor character for a winter wedding.
