Thank you for capturing our special day so well and creating beautiful photos that we will treasure forever. We love our stunning wedding album! You took the time to get to know us from the pre-shoot right up until the wedding day and made us feel comfortable and relaxed, and we had a lot of fun along the way especially with your silly little jokes to get us to laugh!

Kalpa S., Google review, 2018

Westminster's ceremony rooms

Marylebone Road and Mayfair: where Westminster couples say their vows

Westminster City Council runs its ceremonies through a service called A Day to Remember, and its main venue is the Old Marylebone Town Hall at 97 to 113 Marylebone Road, NW1 5PT. The building is Grade II listed, with grand front steps and seven ceremony rooms. The largest, the walnut-panelled Westminster Room, holds 100 guests, which suits a full family ceremony without a hired venue.

The council's guidance allows confetti on the stone steps outside both Mayfair Library and the Old Marylebone Town Hall, but not inside either building, and it asks for biodegradable confetti only. That makes the steps the natural place for the confetti photograph and the first group shots. We plan the group list so the family is on those steps quickly, before the next couple arrives.

Our Old Marylebone Town Hall guide covers the rooms, the steps and how to plan photographs around a register office slot. For Westminster beyond the town hall, see our page for a wedding photographer in Westminster.

The City of London

Marrying in the Square Mile through the Islington Registrar

City of London weddings are handled by a neighbouring borough. Marriages and civil partnerships for the City are provided by the Islington Registrar, whose ceremony rooms are in the listed Islington Town Hall on Upper Street. There are seven rooms for between 2 and 85 guests, and the sweeping marble staircase is often used for photographs before everyone heads back into the City.

The same service, Say I Do Islington, lists over 40 venues licensed for ceremonies across Islington and the City, from ancient livery halls to modern restaurants. That means a City wedding can be legally married in a hall with centuries of history, then move only a few streets for the meal. Our page for a City of London wedding photographer has more local detail.

With around 330,000 people working in the City each day and only 8,583 residents at the 2021 census, a City wedding sits among office buildings. Ask your venue how it handles arrivals, guest access and any building rules on the day, and pass the answers on to us so the timeline fits.

Licensed venues

Livery halls, listed hotels and institution buildings

The licensed venues in central London fall into a few clear types. The City is known for its livery halls, some with private gardens used for receptions and photographs, and for restored listed buildings with grand rooms licensed for ceremonies. Westminster has hotels with sweeping staircases and ballrooms, and institution buildings licensed for civil ceremonies.

Each type changes the photography. A livery hall gives panelling, portraits and a sense of ceremony indoors, so we plan more of the day inside. A hotel with a marble staircase gives a ready-made spot for the full group. A building with a courtyard or terrace gives outdoor light without needing a park permit, which is worth a lot on a busy summer Saturday.

Tell us the venue when you enquire, and we look at its rooms, its staircase and its outdoor space before the day so the plan fits it. For ideas, our guide to London wedding venues covers the wider city.

Portraits outside

Royal Parks permits, City gardens and the river

Couple portraits in central London nearly always mean a short walk, and the walk needs permission. Wedding, civil partnership and lifestyle photography in the Royal Parks needs a wedding and lifestyle permit from the park office, covering up to ten people for one hour. Hyde Park asks for a permit for anything beyond personal photographs on a phone or action camera.

In the City, the Corporation requires a licence or permit for organised shoots in its gardens and churchyards, and names wedding shoots in that rule. St Dunstan in the East, a garden in the ruins of a Wren church, and Postman's Park, with G. F. Watts's 1900 memorial to heroic self-sacrifice, are both covered by it. Leadenhall Market's iron and glass roof, owned by the Corporation, gives cover if it rains.

In Westminster, St James's Park looks along The Mall to Buckingham Palace and has kept pelicans by its lake since 1664, and Victoria Tower Gardens sits between the Thames and the Houses of Parliament. Portraits are planned to fit between the ceremony and the meal, so guests are not left waiting while you are photographed.

A day that crosses the city

Seasons, light and moving between Westminster and the City

Westminster and the City are only a few miles apart, but a day that moves between them has to account for traffic, closed roads and guests who arrive by Underground. Westminster station is served by the Circle, District and Jubilee lines; Liverpool Street by the Elizabeth line and four Underground lines. We build the timeline around the slowest leg, so the car with the couple and the guests on the train arrive close together.

Winter weddings in central London lose the light by late afternoon, so outdoor portraits come first and the rest of the day moves indoors. In summer the landmarks are busy with visitors, so early or later portraits work better than the middle of the day. Spring and autumn give the softest conditions for a walk along the river.

Hyde Park has two public car parks reached from West Carriage Drive, which helps if your portraits are planned there. Elsewhere, check with your venue where a wedding car can stop and wait.
